Fixed Dome Rooflights

Fixed Dome Rooflights

Non-opening, curved architectural units make fixed dome rooflights an ideal choice for spaces where the primary goal is maximising overhead daylight and weather protection without the need for mechanical ventilation. Their smooth, self-draining curved profile naturally sheds rainwater and prevents moisture pooling, making them particularly popular for kitchens, bathrooms, and utility extensions. Our in-house dome rooflight team installs and replaces fixed dome rooflights using high-impact polycarbonate or acrylic skins, durable insulation curbs, and secure, tamper-proof fixings.

Opening Dome Rooflights

Opening Dome Rooflights

Engineered to deliver both abundant natural illumination and flexible background ventilation, opening dome rooflights feature discreet manual winders or motorised electric actuators that elevate the dome smoothly above its upstand. These operable systems can also be integrated with modern convenience features such as automated rain sensors or smart controls for effortless daily airflow management. We install and replace opening dome rooflights complete with weather-resistant hinges, reliable lifting mechanisms, and secure perimeter seals tailored to your living space.

What Are the Benefits of Installing Dome Rooflights?

Dome rooflights bring natural daylight through flat and very low-pitch roofs whilst their raised, curved profile helps rainwater and surface debris drain away more easily. Their performance depends on factors such as dome material, glazing configuration, upstand design, opening mechanism and installation quality.

8 benefits of installing dome rooflights include:

Luxurious kitchen with skylights and dining area.

Allows Rainwater and Dirt to Drain Away More Easily

The raised, curved surface of a dome rooflight encourages rainwater to run towards the surrounding roof rather than collect on the rooflight surface. This shape can also help reduce the accumulation of loose dirt and debris, although periodic cleaning is still required.

Works Well on Flat and Very Low-Pitch Roofs

Dome rooflights can introduce overhead daylight where the main roof has little or no pitch. A compatible upstand raises the dome above the surrounding roof surface, with the complete installation specified around the roof construction and drainage requirements.

Brings Natural Daylight Into Dark Interior Spaces

Installing a dome rooflight can direct daylight into areas that receive limited light through vertical windows, such as flat-roof extensions, kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.

Provides Diffused Light With Opaque Dome Options

Opaque or opalescent dome finishes diffuse incoming daylight rather than providing a completely transparent overhead view. This can create softer light distribution in rooms where direct visibility through the rooflight is not required.

Offers Clear or Opaque Finishes for Daylight or Privacy

Clear dome rooflights provide greater transparency, whilst opaque options obscure direct views through the rooflight and provide more diffused illumination. The appropriate finish depends on the required balance between daylight, visibility and privacy.

Provides a Robust Polycarbonate or Acrylic Outer Cover

Dome rooflights can use polycarbonate or acrylic outer covers that provide a durable protective surface over the roof opening. The material, thickness, and construction vary across rooflight systems, so the dome specification should match the property's requirements.

Supports Fixed and Opening Options for Ventilation

Fixed dome rooflights provide overhead daylight without an opening mechanism, whilst opening models can also introduce controllable ventilation. Opening configurations can be useful in kitchens, bathrooms and other suitable spaces where additional airflow is required.

Offers Insulated Glazed Versions for Better Thermal Comfort

Insulated dome rooflights can incorporate multiple layers or glazed sections designed to limit heat transfer through the roof opening. Overall thermal performance depends on the entire system, including the dome construction, glazing, frame, upstand, and the quality of installation.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

A dome rooflight is a curved architectural glazing unit fitted onto a flat or low-pitch roof to introduce abundant natural daylight into the room below. Featuring a domed profile made from robust polycarbonate or acrylic skins and supported by a structural upstand, it is specifically designed to shed rainwater efficiently whilst providing reliable overhead illumination.

Yes, dome rooflights are commonly installed on flat roofs, including flat-roof extensions, kitchens, bathrooms, and utility spaces. Whilst the roof may appear flat, the dome is mounted on a slightly angled upstand to ensure a minimum pitch that encourages natural rainwater runoff and prevents standing water.

Choose a clear dome rooflight when transparency and maximum visibility through the rooflight are priorities, whilst an opaque or opalescent dome is better suited to spaces where diffused daylight and greater visual obscurity are preferred. Opaque options can be useful for bathrooms and other spaces where direct views through the rooflight are undesirable. The amount of light transmission and opacity vary across individual products.

A glazed dome rooflight incorporates an additional glazing system beneath or as part of the dome assembly, whilst an unglazed dome relies primarily on the dome skins themselves. Insulated glazed configurations are generally more appropriate where thermal performance is important, such as heated living spaces. The correct specification depends on the room, the roof construction, and the performance requirements.

Yes, modern multi-skin dome rooflights equipped with insulated upstands and double- or triple-layer polycarbonate construction are fully suitable for heated rooms in UK homes. They deliver strong thermal performance, helping maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and meet domestic energy-efficiency requirements.

Yes, dome rooflights achieve strong energy efficiency when specified with multi-layer insulating skins, thermally broken curbs, and energy-efficient upstands that minimise heat loss. These features help retain warmth during colder UK winters whilst reducing overall domestic heating demands.

Condensation can develop on a dome rooflight when warm, moisture-rich indoor air meets a sufficiently cold rooflight surface. Indoor humidity, ventilation, room temperature, and the thermal performance of the dome, glazing, frame, and upstand can all influence the risk of condensation. Suitable ventilation, appropriate insulation and a correctly specified rooflight can help manage the conditions that cause condensation.

Yes, opening dome rooflights are available for properties that require both natural daylight and controllable ventilation. Depending on the selected system, opening can be manual or powered. Fixed dome rooflights are also available where ventilation through the rooflight is not required.

Yes, dome rooflights can be installed over kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms when the roof structure and selected system are suitable. These spaces can benefit from additional overhead daylight, whilst an opening dome rooflight can provide another source of ventilation where the design and applicable ventilation requirements permit. Bathrooms may also benefit from an opaque or opalescent finish where greater visual obscurity is preferred.

For many standard polycarbonate dome rooflights, individual square units are available in sizes up to approximately 1800 x 1800 mm, with some specialised or commercial systems extending to around 2400 mm, including selected VELUX Commercial X-Dome configurations. Residential ranges commonly include sizes up to approximately 1500 x 1500 mm or 2000 x 1000 mm. The appropriate size for a specific installation depends on the manufacturer’s available range, dome material, glazing configuration, supporting upstand and dimensions of the structural roof opening, so Bowalker assesses these factors before specifying a suitable dome rooflight.

Yes, an existing dome rooflight can usually be replaced when the roof opening, supporting structure and surrounding roof are suitable for the new system. Bowalker assesses the existing dome, opening dimensions, upstand, waterproofing interface and required fixed or opening configuration before recommending a replacement. Qualifying replacement work is completed under our FENSA registration (33081).

A dome rooflight on a house in Sussex may fall within permitted development rights in the UK if the project meets the applicable conditions and limitations. For qualifying roof alterations, the rooflight must not project more than 150 mm beyond the plane of the existing roof slope and must not exceed the existing roof height. Different requirements can apply to listed buildings, properties with restricted permitted development rights and other circumstances, so homeowners should check the proposal with the relevant local planning authority before work begins.

Yes, dome rooflight installations must comply with UK Building Regulations, particularly regarding thermal performance (Part L), structural safety (Part A), and ventilation (Part F). Bowalker manages qualifying replacement installations under our FENSA registration (Reg. 33081) to guarantee full regulatory compliance.

Clean a dome rooflight by washing the exterior polymer surface using warm water, a mild detergent, and a soft, non-abrasive cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemical solvents that could scratch the plastic or damage weather seals, and periodically inspect the perimeter flashings to ensure long-term performance.
