What Are the Benefits of Installing Aluminium Rooflights?

Aluminium rooflights combine strong, relatively slim framing with flexible glazing options to bring natural daylight into homes whilst supporting larger and more complex roof openings. Their performance depends on factors such as profile design, thermal breaks, glazing specification, frame finish, roof structure, weather sealing, and installation quality.

8 benefits of installing aluminium rooflights include:

Titan Roof Lanterns

Brings In More Natural Light With Slimmer Frames

The high structural strength of aluminium allows for significantly slimmer frame profiles than traditional materials, reducing visible sightlines and maximising the surface area dedicated to natural daylight.

Supports Larger Glass Panels and Wider Roof Openings

Robust aluminium framing provides exceptional load-bearing capacity, making it possible to span expansive roof openings and install large modular or multi-pane glass configurations safely.

Reduces Heat Loss With a Thermally Broken Frame

Thermally broken aluminium systems incorporate an internal insulating barrier that interrupts the conductive metal pathway, significantly limiting thermal transfer and keeping your home energy efficient.

Helps Reduce Condensation Around the Frame

By preventing extreme cold bridging from the outside air, thermally broken frames maintain a warmer interior surface temperature, which helps minimise moisture and condensation buildup around the glazing perimeter.

Provides Long-Term Weather and Corrosion Resistance

Aluminium is naturally resistant to rusting, warping, and weathering, ensuring that the structural framework maintains its integrity and appearance even when exposed to severe UK weather conditions.

Requires Less Frame Maintenance

Durable powder-coated finishes protect the metal surface from fading, peeling, and environmental degradation, meaning the rooflight requires little more than occasional cleaning to stay in pristine condition.

Offers Flexible Colours and Architectural Finishes

Aluminium rooflight frames can be finished in a vast selection of RAL colours and specialised architectural textures, allowing homeowners to match or contrast their existing window and door joinery perfectly.

Creates a Slim, Low-Profile Contemporary Finish

The combination of rigid metal framing and flush, clean lines delivers a sleek, modern aesthetic that complements contemporary flat-roof extensions and minimalist architectural designs.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, aluminium rooflight frames can cause condensation if they lack proper thermal breaks, allowing cold outdoor air to bridge directly to the interior surface. However, modern high-performance aluminium rooflights incorporate advanced thermal barriers and warm-edge technology that keep internal metal temperatures elevated, preventing moisture buildup around the glass perimeter.

Aluminium rooflights can have structural sightlines as slim as 5 mm to 45 mm, depending on the selected rooflight system and how the sightline is measured. Actual profile widths depend on factors such as rooflight dimensions, glazing weight, structural loads, opening mechanism, and manufacturer specifications.

Yes, aluminium rooflights are suitable for large and multi-pane roof openings because aluminium provides high structural strength relative to its weight and can form relatively slim supporting profiles. The allowable glass size and overall span still depend on the frame system, glazing weight, wind loads, supporting roof structure, and project-specific engineering requirements.

Powder-coated finishes protect aluminium rooflight frames by fusing a dry polymer powder electrostatically onto the bare metal before baking it under high heat. This creates a thick, seamless protective barrier that shields the metal from moisture, UV radiation, scratching, and general atmospheric corrosion.

Aluminium rooflights are widely available in standard factory finishes, over 200 custom RAL classic colours, and dual-colour options to match both interior and exterior aesthetics. Homeowners can select from sleek matt, gloss, or textured architectural finishes to seamlessly complement their property’s existing windows and doors.

Aluminium rooflights are best suited for modern flat-roof extensions, open-plan kitchens, dining areas, and commercial spaces where maximum natural light is desired. Their slim sightlines and superior weather resistance also make them an ideal choice for bathrooms, hallways, and living spaces positioned beneath low-pitch roofs.

Yes, aluminium rooflights can be made to measure for bespoke roof openings to fit unique architectural dimensions and complex structural layouts. Custom sizing ensures a precise, weather-tight fit that integrates seamlessly with your specific roofing substrate and insulation layers.

Yes, aluminium rooflights can be installed on both flat and pitched roofs when paired with the correct upstands, curbs, and flashing kits. Proper installation ensures that rainwater drains away efficiently whilst maintaining a secure, watertight seal regardless of the roof’s slope.

Aluminium rooflights require a minimum upstand height of 150 mm above the finished roof level to prevent water ingress and meet standard weatherproofing guidelines. Additionally, the upstand must be structurally sound, insulated, and properly integrated with the roof’s waterproofing membrane to ensure effective long-term drainage.

Yes, an existing rooflight can be replaced with an aluminium rooflight depending on the underlying structural support capacity and aperture dimensions. A professional site survey is recommended to evaluate the existing curb condition and ensure the new, highly durable aluminium system fits safely into place.

Aluminium rooflights qualify as Permitted Development (PD) and do not require full planning permission in some UK residential projects when the proposed work meets the applicable conditions and the property retains the relevant development rights. Requirements vary across the UK, and permission may still be needed because of factors such as rooflight projection, property type, location, listed status, conservation controls, or previous restrictions on permitted development rights.

Yes, UK Building Regulations apply to the installation of aluminium rooflights, regardless of whether the project requires planning permission. New installations must comply with strict thermal efficiency standards (Approved Document L) and structural safety requirements to ensure optimal energy performance.

Yes, aluminium rooflights are suitable for conservation areas and listed buildings only if local planning authorities approve their specific profile design, finish, and low-profile aesthetic. Special slimline heritage-style aluminium frames are often required to match historical architectural character and satisfy local planning constraints.

Yes, a replacement aluminium rooflight can be FENSA certified if it is installed by a registered professional like Bowalker (Reg: 33081). This official certification confirms that your replacement glazing complies with all current building regulations without needing a separate local authority inspection.
