Types of Heritage Windows We Install and Replace

heritage windows

Sash Heritage Windows

A sash heritage window features two vertically sliding sashes within a single frame, maintaining a flush exterior profile when closed. This double-hung configuration is characteristic of Georgian and Victorian architecture, offering authentic period aesthetics, controlled ventilation and a classic appearance suited to historic properties.
Bowalker installs sash heritage windows with slimline double glazing, draught-proof brush seals, multipoint locking and run-through sash horns for period-accurate detailing, available in timber-look uPVC and powder-coated aluminium to suit listed buildings and conservation area properties.
heritage windows

Casement Heritage Windows

Made from thermally efficient uPVC, aluminium or timber, casement heritage windows are side-hinged, outward-opening windows that sit flush with the outer frame, the correct profile for most period properties and a key requirement in conservation areas. Bowalker installs flush casement heritage windows with slimline double glazing with a 12–16mm cavity, friction-stay hinges, multipoint locking and weather-resistant seals.
Period detailing options include ovolo or chamfered bead profiles and Georgian astragal glazing bars across a wide range of finishes. Every installation combines authentic period aesthetics with the thermal performance and low maintenance of modern glazing systems.
heritage windows

Bay and Bow Heritage Windows

We install bay and bow heritage windows that project outward from the main wall, increasing natural light and expanding views without altering the room's footprint. Bay windows use angled frames canted at 45 or 90 degrees for a squared projection, whilst bow windows use narrow frames to form a gentle curve.
Both are defining features of Victorian, Edwardian and interwar properties. Bowalker installations incorporate sash or casement opening lights, high-performance double glazing and weather-resistant seals for authentic period character and low maintenance.
heritage windows

Oriel Heritage Windows

Oriel heritage windows are cantilevered structures projecting from an upper storey, supported by corbels or timber brackets, and unlike bay windows, do not extend to ground level. Associated with medieval, Tudor and Victorian architecture, they take square, canted or polygonal forms, adding depth and grandeur to a façade whilst increasing natural light.
Bowalker installs and replaces oriel windows using uPVC, aluminium or timber frames with high-performance double glazing, working in accordance with conservation area and Listed Building guidelines throughout.
heritage windows

Arched and Swept-Head Heritage Windows

Arched and swept-head heritage windows feature curved tops that add elegance and architectural distinction across Georgian, Gothic Revival, Victorian and Edwardian properties, making them a common requirement in conservation areas and listed buildings. Bowalker installs arched and swept-head windows in engineered aluminium with a 33mm slimline profile and 40-year manufacturer-rated lifespan.
Mechanically jointed uPVC provides smooth, weld-free curves, while timber offers the most authentic finish. Each window is made to measure, with arched glazing bars, decorative head detailing and high-performance double glazing throughout.
heritage windows

Cottage Heritage Windows

Our in-house installers fit cottage heritage windows, a traditional glazing style characterised by multiple small panes divided by slim astragal bars, most commonly seen in rural cottages, Arts and Crafts homes and 1930s properties. Available as casement or double-hung sash in aluminium or uPVC, these windows come in four-over-four and six-over-six pane arrangements.
Optional leaded light detailing is available. Each installation incorporates modern double glazing for strong thermal efficiency whilst retaining the small-pane aesthetic and handcrafted character of the original style.
heritage windows

Leaded Light Heritage Windows

Leaded light heritage windows feature small individual panes joined with lead cames, the narrow lead channels that give these windows their characteristic grid pattern and period elegance. Originating in medieval glazing and carried through to Victorian, Arts and Crafts, and Art Nouveau architecture, they remain among the most recognisable heritage window styles.
Bowalker installs leaded light windows in timber, aluminium or uPVC, with diamond, rectangular and square pane configurations, varying came widths and coloured or textured glass. Toughened or laminated backing panels can also be incorporated where safety standards require.

What Are the Benefits of Installing Heritage Windows?

Installing heritage windows delivers measurable improvements across comfort, security, energy efficiency and property value. Modern heritage windows, including sash and casement styles, use high-performance glazing, multi-chambered frames and thermally broken profiles to reduce heat loss, lower U-values and maintain consistent indoor temperatures throughout the year, all whilst preserving an authentic, period-accurate appearance.

The six key benefits below explain why heritage window replacement is one of the most effective home improvements for period properties.

heritage windows

Better Noise Reduction

Sealed frames and acoustic double glazing significantly reduce external noise, improving indoor comfort in busy or urban locations and creating a quieter, more peaceful living environment.

Increases Property Value

Correctly specified heritage windows strengthen kerb appeal and can add up to 10% to the resale value of a period property, making them one of the most cost-effective improvements for homes with authentic architectural features.

Low Maintenance & Durable

Modern uPVC and aluminium frames resist rot, warping and corrosion, eliminating the need for regular repainting or sealing. Combined with multipoint locking hardware and weather-resistant seals, heritage windows are built for long-term performance with minimal upkeep.

Retains Heat & Reduces Heating Costs

High-performance double glazing and thermally broken frames reduce heat loss and lower heating costs year-round. All heritage windows are manufactured to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations and are available with A-rated energy performance as standard.

Stronger Security With Modern Locking

Multipoint locking systems, toughened glazing options and reinforced frames provide robust protection against intrusion. Our heritage windows are available to PAS 24 security standards, giving homeowners confidence that period style does not come at the expense of modern home security.

Attractive Design

Period-accurate heritage windows restore a property's architectural identity and improve kerb appeal in ways that plastic replacement windows cannot replicate. For listed buildings and conservation area properties, correct glazing is a planning requirement as well as an aesthetic choice.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Heritage windows are traditional-style windows designed to replicate the appearance and detailing of historic properties whilst incorporating modern materials and performance features. They are commonly found in listed buildings, conservation areas and period homes, including Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian and interwar properties, where maintaining architectural authenticity is important and where conservation officers or planning authorities may require period-accurate glazing as a condition of any replacement or renovation work.

Heritage window installation costs range between £600 and £1,500 per window for standard residential sizes, though the final figure depends on several factors: the size and number of windows, the frame material (uPVC, timber or aluminium), the glazing specification (double or triple glazing), and the complexity of the design. Additional considerations that affect cost include site-specific installation requirements such as scaffolding or difficult access, the need for structural adjustments, and any conservation area or Listed Building regulations that specify particular materials or glazing configurations.

Heritage windows are available in uPVC, aluminium and timber, each suited to different property types and planning requirements. uPVC offers strong thermal performance and low maintenance, aluminium provides slim sightlines and a corrosion-resistant powder-coated finish, and engineered timber remains the most authentic option, frequently required by conservation officers and Listed Building consent conditions. All three are compatible with double glazing, and your choice will be confirmed during your free consultation.

Heritage window installation typically takes 30 to 60 minutes per window for a standard casement or sash replacement, whilst larger or more complex windows such as bay, bow or arched styles may take 1-2 hours each. For a standard three-bedroom house, a full installation takes around 2 days, allowing for precise fitting and finishing. Installation time may vary depending on factors such as removal of existing frames, required structural repairs, window size and brief exposure of the opening during frame removal in poor weather.

Bowalker Windows Limited provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on all heritage window installations, covering both workmanship and installation quality. All installations are carried out in compliance with FENSA regulations (registration No. 33081), and a FENSA certificate is issued upon completion, which your conveyancer will require if you sell the property.

No, you do not need to be present at the property during installation, provided we have agreed access arrangements and your window specifications are confirmed in advance. Our fully in-house installers will carry out the work professionally, with careful handling of your property throughout, and full adherence to your specified heritage window design and finish requirements. We will ensure your home is clean, secure and weathertight before we leave.

The cost of replacing heritage windows typically ranges from £500 to £2,000 or more per window, depending on frame material, glazing specification, size and design complexity. Straightforward casement or sash replacements in standard sizes sit towards the lower end, whilst bespoke designs, large bay or oriel windows and installations on listed buildings or in conservation areas, where specific materials or glazing units may be required, tend towards the higher end. All prices quoted by Bowalker are fixed and inclusive of VAT, survey, installation and disposal of existing frames.

Maintenance tips for heritage windows include cleaning frames and glazing regularly with a mild detergent and soft cloth, lubricating hinges, friction stays and locking mechanisms once or twice a year, and inspecting perimeter sealant annually, resealing with a flexible mastic if cracking is visible. Draught-proof seals and brush strips should be checked and replaced annually, particularly on sash windows where brush seals along the meeting rail are prone to wear. Timber frames require repainting or resealing every three to five years, whilst uPVC and aluminium frames are largely maintenance-free beyond regular cleaning.
