Types of Double-Glazed Windows We Install and Replace

Single hung

Casement Double-Glazed Windows

A casement double-glazed window is a hinged window that opens outward like a door, providing smooth operation and controlled ventilation. This style closes tightly against weather seals, helping reduce draughts and improve thermal comfort.
Bowalker Windows Limited fits casement windows with high-performance double glazing, secure locking systems and durable hardware for long-term reliability. If you are replacing older units, we match the opening style and sightlines while improving insulation and security.
Georgian

Sash Double-Glazed Windows

Our in-house window installers fit sash double-glazed windows with smooth vertical sliding panels that keep a traditional frontage while improving day-to-day comfort. This window style suits period homes and character properties because it supports controlled ventilation and tidy sightlines.
We measure each opening precisely and fit double glazing with secure locking and draught-resistant seals for reliable performance. For older sash windows, we retain the classic proportions while improving insulation, noise reduction and security.
Victorian

Tilt and Turn Double-Glazed Windows

We install tilt and turn double-glazed windows for homeowners who want flexible ventilation and easy cleaning from inside the room. Turning the handle 180 degrees opens the window fully inward (turn mode) for cleaning or unrestricted access, while tilting the handle to 90 degrees opens only the top of the sash inward for secure, controlled ventilation.
This design works well for upper floors and busy family homes because it allows fresh air without compromising security. Our window fitter team measures precisely and fits secure hardware with tight weather seals for reliable comfort.

Sliding Double-Glazed Windows

At Bowalker Windows Limited, we fit sliding double-glazed windows that operate on smooth horizontal tracks, making them a practical choice where outward-opening space is limited. This style supports wide views and consistent ventilation control, which suits modern extensions and rooms facing patios or gardens.
We install durable frames, high-performance double glazing and secure locking for dependable comfort and safety. If you are upgrading older sliders, we improve glide performance, sealing and insulation while keeping the same opening format.

Fixed Double-Glazed Windows

Fixed double-glazed windows create a sealed, non-opening glazed unit that delivers strong thermal insulation, reduced draught risk and clear, uninterrupted sightlines for maximum natural light. This style suits picture windows, stairwell glazing, bay fillers and living spaces where ventilation is handled elsewhere.
Bowalker Windows measures each opening precisely and fits high-performance double glazing with secure beading and weather-tight seals. Where existing fixed panes have aged or misted, we replace the unit to restore clarity and improve thermal efficiency.

Roof Double-Glazed Windows

Our experienced window fitters install roof double-glazed windows that bring natural light into lofts and extensions while supporting thermal comfort and weather protection year-round. These units use two panes of glass with a 12-16mm insulating cavity to reduce heat loss and limit external noise.
All installations comply with Building Regulations Part L and are registered with FENSA upon completion. We measure each aperture accurately and fit secure flashings and airtight seals. Where older units have failed seals or persistent condensation, we replace them to restore clarity and efficiency.

Arched and Cathedral Cottage Windows

Arched and cathedral cottage windows feature curved or taller pointed tops, adding vertical emphasis and architectural interest inspired by classical or Gothic elements. They can be fixed, casement or sash styles and suit gable ends or prominent cottage elevations.
Bowalker Windows carries out expert replacement and installation of arched and cathedral cottage windows using durable materials such as timber, thermally broken aluminium or mechanically jointed uPVC for seamless curves. Fitted with high-performance double or triple glazing, they ensure energy efficiency, security and low maintenance whilst preserving historical character and meeting modern comfort standards in traditional homes.

Oriel Cottage Windows

Oriel cottage windows project from the upper floor, supported by corbels or brackets, creating a distinctive cantilevered boxed appearance without extending to ground level. Common in Tudor, Victorian or traditional architecture, they increase natural light, enhance views and add unique character.
At Bowalker, we install and replace oriel cottage windows using durable framing systems in uPVC, aluminium or timber with high-performance glazing options, ensuring energy efficiency, security and low maintenance. They are ideal for first-floor elevations in countryside cottages, preserving historical integrity whilst boosting architectural appeal and interior comfort.

What Are the Benefits of Installing Double-Glazed Windows?

Installing double-glazed windows helps reduce heat loss, cut down on heating costs, lower outside noise and improve home security. Modern double glazing uses two panes of glass with a sealed insulating cavity and well-fitted frames to improve thermal performance and day-to-day comfort. This setup helps keep rooms warmer through winter, cooler in summer and reduces the chance of condensation forming on the inside pane.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Double glazed windows use two panes of glass separated by a sealed insulating gap to reduce heat loss and improve comfort. The sealed unit helps cut draughts, reduce outside noise and limit condensation on the inside pane. When paired with modern frames and secure locking, double glazing also enhances home security and reduces day-to-day energy use.

Double-glazed window installation costs £500 to £1,200 per window installed in the UK, with larger or bespoke units priced higher. Standard casement windows begin from around £1,200 supply and installed, while mid-range options such as panoramic windows and bifold doors typically range from £6,000 to £12,000, and larger or more complex glazed units can reach £14,000 or more. The final price depends on factors such as window size, frame material (uPVC, aluminium or timber), glazing specification, hardware and security features and site access. Bowalker provides a no-obligation quote after a measured survey, with fixed pricing and a clear scope.

Bowalker offers a range of glazing options, so you can match your double-glazed windows to comfort, security, noise control and privacy needs.

  • Low-E Glass: Keeps more heat inside.
  • Argon-Filled Units: Improves insulation in the sealed gap.
  • Acoustic Glass: Helps reduce outside noise.
  • Toughened or Laminated Glass: Adds safety and security.
  • Obscure Glass: Adds privacy while letting light in.

Double-glazed windows are commonly made from uPVC, aluminium or timber, with the frame material selected based on the look you want, maintenance preferences and budget. uPVC is popular for low maintenance and good insulation; aluminium suits slim, modern frames and offers strong durability; and timber offers a classic finish that works well on traditional properties while still supporting modern double glazing.

Double-glazed window installation takes 1 to 2 hours per window, depending on window size, access and the condition of the existing opening. A straightforward replacement can be completed more quickly, whereas larger units or structural adjustments take longer. For many UK homes, a full set of windows is often fitted over 1 to 2 days, with time allowed for careful sealing, trims and final checks.

Bowalker Windows Limited provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on all double-glazed window installations, ensuring peace of mind and long-lasting performance. This covers workmanship and installation quality, giving homeowners confidence that their double-glazed windows are installed to the highest professional standards and comply with FENSA regulations.

No, you do not need to be home for the double-glazed window installation as long as we have access to the property and your preferences are confirmed in advance. Our fully in-house team of installers will carry out the work professionally, ensuring secure handling, careful installation and full adherence to your specified double glazed window design and requirements.

Replacing double glazed windows costs £500 to £1,500+ per window in the UK, depending on the size and specification of the new unit. Standard casement replacements begin from around £1,200 supply and installed, rising to £6,000–£14,000 or more for larger formats such as panoramic windows, bifold doors and glazed lanterns. Prices vary based on factors such as frame material (uPVC, aluminium or timber), glazing upgrades (Low-E, acoustic or laminated), hardware and security features and whether any repairs to the existing opening are needed. Bowalker provides a no-obligation quote after a measured survey, with fixed pricing so the figure agreed before work begins is the figure you pay.

Double glazed windows stay in good condition with simple, regular care. Clean the glass and frames with mild soapy water, then rinse and dry to avoid streaks. Check the seals and drainage slots for dirt or blockage, especially after heavy rain. Lubricate hinges, handles and locking points once or twice a year for smooth operation. Watch for issues such as stiff openings, draughts or misting between panes, as these can indicate worn seals or a failed glazed unit.
