Types of Fixed Windows We Install and Replace

Fixed Sash Windows

Fixed Sash Windows

Providing the appearance of traditional sash-style joinery without moving components, fixed sash windows suit properties where consistent sightlines, natural light and thermal performance take priority over ventilation through the window itself. Without an opening sash mechanism, the design removes operational hardware and associated opening joints. Bowalker installs and replaces fixed sash windows with energy-efficient Low-E sealed units and carefully installed frames in uPVC, timber and aluminium, with the specification selected around the property and opening.

Fixed Flush Windows

Fixed Flush Windows

Sitting level with the surrounding frame for clean, uninterrupted sightlines, fixed flush windows suit contemporary homes and properties where flush styling needs to remain visually consistent across the elevation. Without an opening sash or operating hardware, fixed units create a simple exterior profile and can complement period or conservation settings where the selected frame and glazing specification are appropriate. We install and replace fixed flush windows in uPVC, aluminium and timber with energy-efficient sealed units and weather-resistant perimeter seals.

Fixed Heritage Windows
Fixed Heritage Windows

Non-opening glazing, combined with traditional frame proportions and period-inspired detailing, allows fixed heritage windows to complement listed buildings, conservation areas and period homes where architectural character matters. Depending on the selected frame system, you can specify traditional moulding profiles, Georgian bars or astragal detailing to complement existing joinery and divided-light patterns. Bowalker installs and replaces fixed heritage windows with carefully selected frame profiles and glazing specifications suited to the property's character and, where applicable, relevant conservation requirements.

Fixed Bay Windows
Fixed Bay Windows

Non-opening glazed sections within projecting bay configurations provide natural light and broad external views without the operating hardware required by opening casements, making fixed panes practical for sections of Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary bay windows where ventilation is provided elsewhere. You can combine fixed and opening sections within the same bay configuration to meet the room's ventilation needs. We install and replace fixed bay windows with carefully aligned frames and energy-efficient sealed units selected around the complete bay design.

Learn More →
Fixed Arched Windows
Fixed Arched Windows

Curved or shaped non-opening frames add distinctive architectural detail to feature elevations, entrance areas and period properties whilst maximising the glazed area within the shaped opening. Because they do not require an opening sash, fixed arched units can glaze a greater proportion of the shaped aperture, maintaining the proportions of the curved head without the frame-depth constraints that apply to opening arched casements. Bowalker installs and replaces made-to-measure fixed arched windows with bespoke frame profiles and glazing specifications tailored to each opening's radius and dimensions.

Fixed Cottage Windows
Fixed Cottage Windows

Traditional proportions, Georgian bars or astragal detailing and period-inspired frame finishes allow fixed cottage windows to complement cottages, farmhouses and rural properties where additional natural light is required without an opening mechanism. Fixed units can sit alongside opening casements within the same elevation, maintaining consistent window proportions where ventilation is provided elsewhere. We install and replace fixed cottage windows with energy-efficient sealed units and suitable frame options in timber, woodgrain uPVC and aluminium.

Fixed Historic Windows
Fixed Historic Windows

Period-inspired proportions, heritage-style glazing bars and traditional frame finishes distinguish fixed historic windows from standard non-opening replacements, making them suitable for older properties where maintaining architectural character is important. Leaded detailing, slimline sealed units and sympathetic moulding profiles can be incorporated where appropriate, with the specification selected around the property's existing features and relevant conservation requirements. Bowalker installs and replaces fixed historic windows with careful attention to frame proportions, glazing details and established sightlines.

Fixed Picture Windows
Fixed Picture Windows

Large non-opening glazed areas designed to provide natural light and broad, uninterrupted views define fixed picture windows, making them suitable for living rooms, open-plan extensions, stairwells and feature elevations where expansive glazing is a priority. Without hinges or opening hardware, the design provides a simple sealed configuration, with thermal performance determined by the complete frame and glazing specification. We install and replace fixed picture windows with sealed units incorporating Low-E glass, argon-filled cavities and thermally efficient frame options.

Learn More →
Fixed Crittall-style Windows
Fixed Crittall-style Windows

Slim steel-look frames and defined glazing bars give fixed Crittall-style windows a structured industrial appearance suited to feature elevations, internal screens and contemporary extensions where geometric detailing is a priority. Thermally broken aluminium profiles can create narrow sightlines while glazing bars provide the characteristic grid-style appearance. We install and replace fixed Crittall-style windows with carefully aligned glazing bars and durable powder-coated finishes in black, anthracite and other available RAL colours.

Learn More →

Fixed uPVC Windows

Fixed uPVC Windows

Low-maintenance construction, multi-chambered profiles and straightforward cleaning make uPVC a practical frame material for fixed windows across many property styles. The absence of opening hardware simplifies routine maintenance, while compatible systems can incorporate Low-E glass, argon-filled sealed units and warm-edge spacer bars to support thermal performance. Bowalker installs and replaces fixed uPVC windows with double or compatible triple glazing and a range of colour and woodgrain foil finishes, including anthracite grey, agate grey and Irish oak where available.

Learn More →

Fixed Aluminium Windows

Fixed Aluminium Windows

For fixed windows requiring larger glazed areas and refined sightlines, aluminium combines slim frame proportions with structural strength and long-term durability. Modern thermally broken aluminium profiles reduce heat transfer through the frame while retaining the narrow sections associated with aluminium window systems. Our in-house team installs and replaces fixed aluminium windows in standard and bespoke configurations with energy-efficient glazing and durable powder-coated finishes across a range of RAL colours, with dual-colour options available where supported by the selected system.

Learn More →
Fixed Timber Windows
Fixed Timber Windows

Natural character and traditional joinery detailing make timber a suitable frame material for fixed windows in period properties, heritage-style renovations and homes where wooden frames complement the existing architecture. Engineered timber can improve dimensional stability compared with traditional solid timber while retaining its natural appearance. We install and replace fixed timber windows with energy-efficient sealed units, carefully selected frame profiles and durable microporous paint or stain finishes suited to the property's character.

Learn More →

Double Glazed Fixed Windows

Double Glazed Fixed Windows

Two panes of glass separated by an insulating cavity allow double-glazed fixed windows to provide better thermal performance than traditional single glazing. Compatible sealed units can incorporate Low-E glass, argon-filled cavities and warm-edge spacer bars to help reduce heat transfer through the glazing and around the glass edge. We install and replace double-glazed fixed windows with energy-efficient sealed units and compatible frame systems in uPVC, aluminium and timber, with the complete specification selected around the required thermal performance.

Learn More →
Triple Glazed Fixed Windows
Triple Glazed Fixed Windows

Where the frame and glazing specification are suitable, triple-glazed fixed windows use three panes of glass separated by two insulating cavities to provide enhanced thermal performance. Because the glazing does not form part of an opening sash, there are no hinge or balance mechanisms to accommodate, although the frame must still be specified for the additional glazing weight. Bowalker installs and replaces triple-glazed fixed windows with compatible frames and glazing systems selected around the dimensions and required performance.

Obscure Glass Fixed Windows
Obscure Glass Fixed Windows

Patterned privacy glazing lets fixed windows diffuse natural light while limiting clear views, making it suitable for bathrooms, stairwells, entrance areas and overlooked elevations where ventilation is provided elsewhere. Pilkington Texture Glass offers five privacy levels, from Level 1 (least obscuration) to Level 5 (most obscuration). We install and replace obscure glass fixed windows with suitable privacy glazing, weather-resistant seals and compatible frames in uPVC, aluminium and timber.

Learn More →
Satin Glass Fixed Windows
Satin Glass Fixed Windows

A smooth, translucent finish lets satin glass fixed windows diffuse natural light while reducing direct visibility through the glazing, making them suitable for bathrooms, entrance areas, stairwells and contemporary privacy applications. Unlike patterned obscure glass, satin glazing provides a more uniform surface appearance across the pane. Bowalker installs and replaces satin glass fixed windows with energy-efficient sealed units and compatible uPVC, aluminium and timber frame options.

Learn More →
Leaded Glass Fixed Windows
Leaded Glass Fixed Windows

Leaded glass fixed windows combine non-opening sealed glazing with decorative lead patterns such as diamonds, square grids and traditional geometric layouts. The stable fixed design provides an uninterrupted glazed surface, allowing larger and more detailed lead patterns without the constraints of opening sashes or dividing rails. This makes them suitable for cottages, period properties and feature windows where decorative character and modern glazing performance are both required. We install and replace leaded glass fixed windows with precisely aligned patterns, secure frames and energy-efficient sealed units.

Learn More →
Stained Glass Fixed Windows
Stained Glass Fixed Windows

Coloured or decorative glazing within a sealed non-opening frame creates a distinctive architectural feature well suited to entranceways, stairwells, feature elevations and period properties where stained glass forms a focal point. Fixed units allow larger stained glass compositions across the aperture without opening hardware or dividing frame sections. For a secure, consistent finish, Bowalker installs and replaces stained glass fixed windows with carefully positioned decorative glazing, durable frames and designs suited to each property’s architectural character.

Mirror Glass Fixed Windows
Mirror Glass Fixed Windows

Reflective solar-control glazing can increase daytime privacy and help manage glare and solar heat gain in large fixed windows and overlooked elevations. The privacy effect is strongest when external light levels are higher than inside and can reduce or reverse when the interior becomes brighter than outside. Bowalker installs and replaces mirror-glass fixed windows with reflective sealed units and compatible structural frames, selected to meet the required light transmission, reflectivity and solar-control performance.

Secondary Glazing for Fixed Windows
Secondary Glazing for Fixed Windows

Adding a carefully measured internal glazed panel behind an existing fixed window can improve thermal performance and reduce external noise without removing the original window, making secondary glazing particularly useful for period and heritage properties where retaining existing fabric is important. Fixed secondary panels offer a simple, non-opening configuration when you do not need access or ventilation through the secondary unit. Using made-to-measure secondary glazing with slim internal frames, Bowalker helps maintain the appearance of the existing window while limiting visual impact within the reveal.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed windows are non-opening windows designed to provide natural light and clear external views where ventilation through the window is not required. They do not contain opening sashes, hinges or operating handles, resulting in a simple glazing configuration with fewer moving components. Fixed windows are commonly used in living rooms, stairwells and feature elevations and can be combined with opening windows to balance daylight, views and ventilation.

Fixed window installation takes one to two hours per window, and most standard installations are completed in a single day. Total time may vary depending on window size, access, removal of existing frames and any required structural adjustments.

Clean fixed windows with warm water, mild detergent and a soft microfibre cloth, working across the glass, frames and seals to remove dirt without damaging coatings or finishes. For large picture or floor-to-ceiling windows, use a soft squeegee or suitable telescopic window-cleaning tool to reach higher sections. Keep drainage channels clear and avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals or pressure washers around glazing seals.

Choose fixed windows based on the opening size, required natural light, external view, frame material, glazing performance and whether ventilation is needed elsewhere in the room. Large picture windows suit spaces where uninterrupted views matter, while fixed arched, heritage or Crittall-style windows add stronger architectural detail. You can then choose uPVC, aluminium or timber frames based on appearance, maintenance, and thermal requirements.

Consider fixed window design ideas such as large picture windows for uninterrupted garden views, floor-to-ceiling glazing for brighter living spaces, arched fixed windows for architectural features and Crittall-style fixed windows for structured industrial detailing. Fixed panes can also be positioned beside or above opening windows and doors to increase daylight without adding unnecessary opening mechanisms. Matching frame colours and sightlines across adjoining glazing creates a consistent exterior appearance.

Bowalker Windows Limited provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on qualifying fixed-window installations and replacements, supporting long-term confidence in installation workmanship. Our in-house team completes applicable replacement window installations under FENSA registration (33081), supporting compliance with relevant Building Regulations.
