Types of Obscure Glass Windows We Install and Replace

obscure-glass-windows

Frosted Glass Window

A frosted glass window features an acid-etched or matte surface that diffuses natural light while limiting visibility through the pane. This obscure glazing option suits bathroom windows, ground-floor rooms and overlooked elevations where privacy matters.
Bowalker supplies frosted glass window installation and replacement services with double-glazed units, low-E coatings and sealed glazing beads to improve insulation and reduce glare. Available in uPVC, aluminium and timber frames, these windows suit casement, tilt-and-turn and fixed-light designs, offering durable, low-maintenance performance.

Etched Glass Window

An etched glass window features a sandblasted or chemically treated surface that creates a semi-opaque finish to diffuse light and limit visibility. Suited to entrance doors, bathroom windows, side panels and fanlights, etched glass is available in varying opacity levels, from light surface texturing that softens views to deeply sandblasted finishes that provide near-complete privacy.
Bowalker installs and replaces etched glass windows with bespoke glazing units, secure sealing and regulation-compliant fitting, with acid-etched and sandblasted options and bespoke pattern work available on request.
Obscure Glass Window

Textured/Patterned Glass Window

A textured or patterned glass window features embossed or reeded designs that diffuse light and distort visibility for added privacy. Popular options include Stippolyte, Cotswold, Minster, Florielle and ribbed glass patterns, each offering different obscuration levels.
Bowalker installs and replaces patterned glass windows for bathrooms, modesty panels and privacy glazing using double-glazed obscure units with weather seals and thermally efficient frames. These windows provide decorative flexibility, reliable light transmission and durable performance for modern and traditional homes.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Obscure windows are windows fitted with frosted glass, patterned glass, or textured glass designed to reduce visibility while allowing natural light to pass through. They are commonly used in bathroom windows, ground-floor rooms and overlooked elevations where privacy glass is required without blocking light transmission.

Obscure window installation costs range from £250 to £800 per window, depending on factors such as window size, frame material (uPVC, aluminium or timber), glazing type and privacy rating. Additional factors such as access, replacement requirements and bespoke glass designs can also affect the final installation cost.

Obscure windows are made from frames in uPVC, aluminium or timber, combined with frosted, patterned or etched glass glazing units. These materials provide durability, thermal insulation and secure window glazing suitable for both modern and traditional properties.

Obscure window installation takes 30 to 60 minutes per window, while a full property installation can take 1 to 2 days, depending on the number of windows and complexity. Installation time may vary based on window size, access and whether a full window replacement or glass replacement is required.

Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on obscure window installation. This covers workmanship and installation quality, ensuring each glazing unit is fitted to compliant standards and performs reliably over time.

No, you do not need to be at home during the installation as long as access is arranged and specifications are confirmed in advance. Bowalker’s in-house installers carry out the work securely and complete the installation to the agreed requirements.

The cost to replace obscure windows ranges between £200 and £700 per window for glass-only replacement and £400 to £1,000+ for full window replacement. The final cost depends on the glazing unit, frame condition, window size and installation requirements.

Maintenance for obscure windows includes regular cleaning of the glass and frame, checking seals to prevent draughts and ensuring hinges and locks operate smoothly. Proper ventilation in bathroom windows helps reduce condensation and maintain long-term performance.

Avoid abrasive cleaning products on frosted or etched glass, as these can scratch or dull the surface finish over time. A mild detergent and a soft cloth are sufficient for routine cleaning.
