Types of Casement Windows We Install and Replace

Casement Sash Windows

Casement Sash Windows

Hinged opening sashes within a surrounding outer frame give casement sash windows flexible ventilation, with single or multiple opening sections available depending on the room, window size and airflow requirements. Side-hung configurations provide practical everyday ventilation, while top-hung fanlights can be positioned above fixed or opening lower sections. Bowalker installs and replaces casement sash windows with precisely installed frames, smooth-operating friction hinges, secure multipoint locking and energy-efficient Low-E sealed units.

Casement Flush Windows

Casement Flush Windows

Sitting level with the outer frame when closed, flush casement windows create a clean, understated exterior profile suited to contemporary properties and traditional homes where less prominent frame detailing is preferred. Flush profiles can also complement period renovations and some conservation settings, subject to the property's character and relevant planning requirements. We install and replace flush casement windows with secure multipoint locking, weather-resistant compression seals and energy-efficient glazing in uPVC, timber and aluminium frames.

Casement Heritage Windows
Casement Heritage Windows

Carefully specified profiles, traditional glazing bars and period-inspired hardware distinguish casement heritage windows from standard replacements, making them well suited to period properties and heritage-style renovations where established sightlines and architectural character matter. Depending on the selected frame system, ovolo or lamb's tongue moulding profiles, Georgian bars or astragal detailing can be specified to complement existing joinery. Our in-house installers install heritage casement windows with sympathetic profiles, secure hardware and energy-efficient sealed units in uPVC, aluminium and timber.

Casement Bay Windows
Casement Bay Windows

Providing ventilation from selected sections whilst retaining the natural light and architectural depth of a projecting bay, casement bay windows suit Victorian and Edwardian properties where sash or casement windows form part of the original elevation. Opening arrangements across the central and angled sections can be tailored to each room's ventilation needs. Bowalker installs and replaces casement bay windows with carefully aligned frames, secure multipoint hardware and energy-efficient sealed units for consistent operation across the complete bay.

Casement Arched Windows
Casement Arched Windows

Where curved or shaped frame detailing creates a distinctive architectural feature on a period or feature elevation, casement arched windows combine hinged opening sections with bespoke frames shaped to match the curve and dimensions of the existing opening. The curved upper section typically forms a fixed light above an opening casement below, with the frame profile maintained consistently across both sections. We install and replace arched casement windows with carefully measured bespoke frames, suitable friction hinges, secure multipoint locking and precisely fitted sealed units.

Casement Cottage Windows
Casement Cottage Windows

Traditional proportions, glazing bars, heritage-style ironmongery and woodgrain finishes combine in cottage casement windows to complement the exterior character of cottages, farmhouses and rural properties where window detailing contributes directly to the building's aesthetic. Monkey tail handles, espagnolette stays and other period-appropriate hardware options are available to reinforce the traditional appearance alongside the functional opening sash. Our installers install cottage casement windows with secure multipoint hardware, compression weather-resistant seals and energy-efficient sealed units in engineered timber, woodgrain uPVC or aluminium frames.

Casement Historic Windows
Casement Historic Windows

Carefully selected profiles, traditional glazing proportions and period-inspired hardware distinguish historic casement windows from standard replacements, making them suitable for Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian properties where retaining architectural character is important. Slim glazing configurations and sympathetic frame details can be considered where appropriate, with the window specification selected to complement the property's character and relevant conservation requirements where applicable. Bowalker installs and replaces historic casement windows with carefully selected profiles, glazing details and suitable hardware, balancing traditional appearance with modern thermal performance.

Casement Picture Windows

Larger areas of fixed glazing combined with one or more opening casement sections make picture casement windows well suited to living rooms, extensions and feature elevations where natural light, broad outward views and practical ventilation are priorities. Opening sections can be positioned around the principal fixed pane to provide airflow while retaining a generous glazed area. We install and replace casement picture windows with slim structural frames, sealed units incorporating Low-E glass and argon-filled cavities, secure locking hardware and carefully positioned opening sections to balance views, ventilation and thermal performance.

Casement Crittall-style Windows
Casement Crittall-style Windows

Slim thermally broken aluminium profiles, geometric glazing bars and hinged opening sections give Crittall-style casement windows their characteristic steel-look appearance alongside practical everyday ventilation. Thermally broken aluminium systems allow narrow sightlines and larger glazed areas while reducing heat transfer through the frame compared with non-thermally broken aluminium. Our in-house installers install Crittall-style casement windows with energy-efficient glazing, secure multipoint hardware and durable powder-coated finishes in a range of RAL colours.

Casement uPVC Windows

Casement uPVC Windows

Low-maintenance construction, multi-chambered profiles and good thermal performance make uPVC a practical frame material for casement windows across traditional and contemporary properties. Compatible systems can incorporate Low-E glass, argon-filled sealed units and warm-edge spacer bars to improve thermal performance. We install and replace uPVC casement windows with secure multipoint locking, durable hinges, weather-resistant seals and a range of colour and woodgrain foil finishes.

Casement Aluminium Windows

Casement Aluminium Windows

Slim profiles, structural strength and long-term durability make aluminium a practical frame material for contemporary properties, extensions and renovations where narrow sightlines and larger glazed areas are priorities. Modern thermally broken aluminium frames reduce heat transfer through the frame while retaining the slim profiles associated with aluminium window systems. Bowalker installs and replaces aluminium casement windows with energy-efficient glazing, secure multipoint locking and durable powder-coated finishes across a range of RAL colours, with dual-colour options available where supported by the selected system.

Casement Timber Windows
Casement Timber Windows

Natural character and traditional joinery detailing make timber casement windows particularly suited to cottages, period properties and homes where wooden frames complement the existing architecture. Engineered timber can improve dimensional stability compared with traditional solid timber while retaining the natural grain and appearance associated with wooden windows. We install and replace timber casement windows with energy-efficient sealed units, suitable locking hardware and durable microporous paint or stain finishes, combining traditional appearance with modern glazing performance.

Double Glazed Casement Windows

Double Glazed Casement Windows

Two panes of glass separated by an insulating cavity allow double-glazed casement windows to improve thermal performance compared with traditional single glazing while retaining the practical ventilation of hinged opening sashes. Compatible sealed units can incorporate Low-E glass, argon-filled cavities and warm-edge spacer bars to reduce heat transfer through the glazing. Bowalker installs and replaces double-glazed casement windows with energy-efficient sealed units, secure multipoint locking and weather-resistant compression seals selected around the window system.

Triple Glazed Casement Windows
Triple Glazed Casement Windows

Three panes of glass separated by two insulating cavities give triple-glazed casement windows enhanced thermal performance over standard double-glazed units, provided the selected frame system and opening configuration can support the additional glazing weight. Compatible frames and appropriately rated hinges are required to maintain smooth sash operation and consistent compression against the weather seal over the long term. We install and replace triple-glazed casement windows with compatible frames, suitable locking hardware, and accurately fitted weather seals.

Obscure Glass Casement Windows
Obscure Glass Casement Windows

Combining privacy glazing with hinged opening sashes, obscure glass casement windows provide natural light, practical ventilation and reduced visibility in bathrooms, cloakrooms and overlooked rooms where privacy and airflow are both required. Pilkington Texture Glass offers five privacy levels, from Level 1 for the least obscuration to Level 5 for the greatest, so you can choose the glazing to suit the room and your privacy needs. Our in-house installers install obscure glass casement windows with suitable privacy glazing, secure multipoint hardware and energy-efficient sealed units.

Satin Glass Casement Windows
Satin Glass Casement Windows

The smooth, even translucent finish of satin glass diffuses natural light consistently without the surface texture of patterned obscure glass, making satin glass casement windows a popular choice for bathrooms, bedrooms and privacy-sensitive rooms where a cleaner, more uniform appearance is preferred alongside practical opening ventilation. Combined with a hinged opening sash, satin glazing provides increased privacy and airflow from the same window, without the need for net curtains or blinds. We install and replace satin glass casement windows with secure multipoint hardware, energy-efficient sealed units and accurately fitted compression weather seals.

Leaded Glass Casement Windows
Leaded Glass Casement Windows

Decorative lead patterns, including diamonds, squares and traditional grid arrangements, combine with hinged opening sashes in leaded glass casement windows, complementing cottages and period properties where decorative glazing contributes directly to the architectural character of the elevation. Maintaining lead pattern alignment across both the fixed frame and opening sash requires careful planning at the survey stage to ensure the decorative design reads consistently when the window is closed. Bowalker installs and replaces leaded glass casement windows with carefully aligned lead patterns, secure multipoint hardware and energy-efficient sealed units.

Stained Glass Casement Windows
Stained Glass Casement Windows

Coloured or decorative glazing combined with a hinged opening sash lets stained glass casement windows add decorative character and controlled ventilation to period properties, entrance areas and feature elevations where decorative glass forms part of the architectural design. Stained glass panels are most commonly positioned in the upper lights of casement windows, displaying decorative colour and pattern prominently whilst the lower opening section provides practical everyday ventilation. We install and replace stained glass casement windows with carefully positioned decorative glazing, secure multipoint hardware and precisely fitted frames throughout.

Mirror Glass Casement Windows
Mirror Glass Casement Windows

Combining reflective glazing with hinged opening sashes, mirror glass casement windows suit sun-facing and overlooked rooms where glare reduction, daytime privacy and practical ventilation are priorities. Reflective glass can increase daytime privacy when external light levels are higher than internal light levels, while suitable solar-control specifications can also help manage glare and solar heat gain. Our in-house installers install mirror glass casement windows with secure multipoint locking, weather-resistant seals and accurately installed reflective sealed units selected to meet the required light transmission and solar-control performance.

Secondary Glazing for Casement Windows
Secondary Glazing for Casement Windows

Adding a separate internal glazed panel behind an existing casement window improves thermal and acoustic performance without removing the original frame, making secondary glazing a practical solution for period properties, listed buildings and conservation areas where planning requirements restrict replacement windows. Hinged, sliding or removable secondary panels can be configured to maintain practical access to the existing opening sash for ventilation and cleaning. Bowalker installs secondary glazing for casement windows with carefully measured internal frames and glazing specifications selected to help reduce draughts, heat loss and external noise while retaining the existing primary window.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Casement windows are hinged windows that open from the side or top to provide controllable ventilation and clear outward views. Side-hung casements are among the most common configurations, whilst top-hung sections can provide ventilation through smaller openings. Modern casement windows are available in uPVC, aluminium and timber with double or triple glazing, weather-resistant seals and secure locking systems.

Casement window installation takes around two to four hours per window, whilst several straightforward replacements may be completed within one to two days. The exact timeframe depends on the window size, frame material, property access and condition of the existing opening. Our in-house installers complete the fitting, sealing, hardware adjustment and final operational checks before finishing each installation.

Clean casement windows with warm water, mild detergent and a soft microfibre cloth on the glass and frames, removing dirt from corners, seals and the lower frame where debris can collect. Open the sash to clean accessible frame edges and use a soft brush to remove dirt around hinges, locking points and drainage channels. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals and pressure washers that could damage glazing coatings, seals or frame finishes. Check that hinges, handles and locks operate smoothly after cleaning and remove any debris restricting drainage or sash movement.

Choose the right casement windows by considering your property’s architectural style, frame material, glazing performance, opening configuration, ventilation requirements and maintenance preferences. uPVC provides low-maintenance versatility, aluminium offers slimmer contemporary profiles and timber complements traditional or period properties. You can then choose side-hung, top-hung or combined opening configurations based on room layout, ventilation needs and available opening space.

Consider casement window design ideas such as flush frames for cleaner sightlines, Georgian or leaded glazing for period properties, slim aluminium profiles for contemporary extensions and timber casements for cottages or traditional homes. You can also combine larger fixed panes with opening casements to maximise views and natural light whilst retaining ventilation. Matching frame colours, glazing bars and hardware across related windows can create a consistent exterior appearance.

Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on qualifying casement window installation and replacement work, offering long-term assurance for our workmanship. Our in-house team completes applicable replacement window installations under FENSA registration (33081), supporting compliance with relevant Building Regulations and professional installation standards.
