Simon and Brandon fitted our three windows in our garage > studio conversion and were great through the day. Arrived when they said they would, were very polite, respectful and pleasant people. Found answers to questions we didn’t realise about the installation and though we haven’t yet finished the project the windows are a very exciting and big step forward for us. Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Replacing windows or doors in Hurstpierpoint does not always require planning permission, particularly when the replacement maintains the property’s existing appearance and permitted development rights apply. Permission may be necessary for listed buildings, significant design changes or properties subject to specific planning restrictions.

Homeowners in the High Street, Hurst Wickham and Langton Lane conservation areas should check their property’s status before choosing replacement frames or glazing. Mid Sussex District Council is the local planning authority responsible for confirming applicable requirements.

Hurstpierpoint has three conservation areas: Hurstpierpoint, Hurst Wickham and Langton Lane. These areas contain historic cottages and period properties where traditional timber sash windows, casement windows and panelled timber doors contribute to the architectural character.

Unsuitable modern replacements, particularly those that alter original proportions or materials, may face planning restrictions. Article 4 directions may restrict permitted development rights on specific properties. Homeowners should confirm whether these controls apply through Mid Sussex District Council before replacing windows or doors.

Traditional sliding sash, casement and bay windows are well suited to many Hurstpierpoint properties. Timber sash windows complement historic cottages along the High Street and Victorian villas on Hassocks Road, while bay windows suit late Victorian and Edwardian homes around South Avenue.

Modern houses outside sensitive heritage settings may suit uPVC or aluminium casement windows. For properties within Hurstpierpoint’s conservation areas, replacement windows should respect the building’s original frame proportions, glazing bars, opening patterns and materials.

Panelled timber entrance doors are particularly suitable for Hurstpierpoint’s historic cottages and period houses, especially around the High Street, Hurst Wickham and Langton Lane. Traditional door proportions, decorative glazing and appropriate ironmongery help preserve their original appearance.

Homes around South Avenue may suit timber entrance doors that complement recessed porches and Edwardian architectural details. Contemporary properties elsewhere in Hurstpierpoint may suit composite, aluminium, uPVC or glazed doors, depending on the building’s design and any applicable planning restrictions.

Pitched-roof windows are suitable for many Hurstpierpoint loft conversions and properties with traditional tiled or slate roofs. Flat-roof rooflights and roof lanterns may suit modern single-storey extensions, while low-profile conservation rooflights may be appropriate for certain historic buildings.

For properties within the High Street, Hurst Wickham and Langton Lane conservation areas, rooflight selection should consider roof pitch, visibility, original roofing materials and planning restrictions. Mid Sussex District Council should be consulted where heritage controls may affect the installation.

Hurstpierpoint homeowners should consider replacing fascias, soffits and guttering when they show persistent water damage, rotting timber, sagging sections, loose fixings or repeated drainage problems. Older properties around the High Street and Hurst Wickham may require closer inspection where original timber roofline components have deteriorated.

For homes within conservation areas, replacement roofline products should respect the property’s traditional appearance. Matching existing fascia profiles, bargeboards, colours and materials helps preserve the character of historic Hurstpierpoint buildings.

Bowalker offers guarantee packages for qualifying window and door installations in Hurstpierpoint. Its standard Silver Guarantee provides 10 years of frame cover, 5 years for glazed sealed units and 1 year for hardware and fitting. Gold and Platinum packages offer extended protection for selected components.

Bowalker is FENSA registered under number 33081. Hurstpierpoint homeowners should confirm their selected guarantee package, insurance-backed protection and specific product and workmanship terms before installation, as cover varies between packages and products.

Homeowners in Hurstpierpoint should regularly clean replacement window frames and glazing, remove debris from drainage channels and inspect hinges, locks and weather seals. Properties on exposed village-edge elevations overlooking the South Downs may benefit from closer inspections after periods of wind-driven rain.

For timber sash and casement windows in the High Street, Hurst Wickham and Langton Lane conservation areas, inspect paintwork, glazing putty and exposed timber for moisture damage. Use manufacturer-approved cleaning products and preserve original decorative details where they contribute to the property’s historic character.

New doors in Hurstpierpoint should be cleaned regularly, with attention to thresholds, weather seals, hinges and locking mechanisms. Period homes along the High Street and around South Avenue may have recessed entrances where leaves, dust and moisture accumulate near door thresholds.

For painted timber doors within Hurstpierpoint’s conservation areas, inspect the surface for peeling paint, cracks or exposed wood and arrange suitable maintenance before moisture causes deterioration. Composite, aluminium and uPVC doors should be maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Hurstpierpoint homeowners should clean rooflight glazing, inspect interior frames for condensation and check accessible seals for signs of water ingress. Properties near mature trees may require more frequent removal of leaves and debris around rooflight openings.

For older homes with traditional clay-tiled or slate roofs, rooflight maintenance should include professional inspections of surrounding flashing and roof coverings. Rooflights installed on modern extensions should be checked after heavy rainfall for drainage problems, damaged seals or developing leaks.

An existing rooflight in a Hurstpierpoint property may be replaced without changing the roof opening if the new unit matches the existing dimensions and is compatible with the roof pitch, flashing and surrounding structure. A professional survey should establish whether the current opening is suitable.

For historic properties in the High Street, Hurst Wickham and Langton Lane conservation areas, retaining the existing opening may help limit changes to the roof’s appearance. However, planning permission or listed building consent may still be required depending on the property’s designation and the proposed replacement.

Before Bowalker’s installation team arrives at your Hurstpierpoint property, prepare the work areas and arrange suitable access to minimise disruption. Homes along the High Street and around College Lane in Hurst Wickham may require advance parking and unloading arrangements because of narrow roads and limited access.

  • Clear Work Areas: Move furniture, rugs and fragile belongings away from windows, doors or rooflight installation areas.
  • Remove Window Coverings: Take down curtains, blinds and decorative fittings that could obstruct installation.
  • Arrange Parking and Access: Confirm suitable parking, unloading space and clear access routes, particularly around the High Street and College Lane.
  • Provide Power Access: Ensure accessible electrical sockets are available for installation tools.
  • Check Property Restrictions: Inform Bowalker’s team of any listed building status, conservation requirements or relevant permissions.
  • Secure Pets and Children: Keep pets and children away from installation areas throughout the work.
