Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Need Planning Permission to Replace Windows or Doors in Newhaven?
No, planning permission is generally not required for like-for-like window and door replacements in Newhaven, as these works usually fall under Permitted Development rights for standard residential houses. You will need planning permission if your property is a listed building, is located in a conservation area or subject to an Article 4 Direction, is a flat or maisonette, or if the replacement involves structural changes such as enlarging openings or installing new bay or bow windows. All replacement windows and doors must comply with current Building Regulations covering energy efficiency, safety, and ventilation, and using a FENSA (Reg: 33081) or CERTASS registered installer like Bowalker Windows Limited means your installation is self-certified and you receive a compliance certificate required for selling your property. If you are unsure about your property’s status or the nature of your planned changes, check with Lewes District Council or consult a windows and door specialist Newhaven for tailored advice.
Are There Conservation Area or Article 4 Restrictions for Replacement Windows and Doors in Newhaven?
Yes, conservation area and Article 4 restrictions in Newhaven apply to replacement windows and doors. These controls are in place to preserve the traditional appearance of properties. You may need planning permission before installing new or double glazed windows, and you will often be required to match the original style, material, and detailing – such as sash or casement windows, timber frames, or specific glazing patterns. In some cases, Article 4 directions remove permitted development rights, making it necessary to seek approval even for minor changes, and specifying that modern materials like uPVC windows or composite doors may not be allowed if they do not reflect the original design. Consult with Lewes District Council or a windows and door specialist in Newhaven before starting any replacement project to ensure compliance.
Which Window Styles Are Best Suited to Homes in Newhaven?
Certain window styles are well-suited to Newhaven homes because they address coastal weather, noise, and heritage property requirements. Casement windows offer strong weather resistance and effective sealing, making them a practical choice for exposed locations. Sash windows maintain the traditional appearance needed for period properties while supporting modern double glazing for thermal efficiency. Tilt and turn windows provide flexible ventilation and high security, which is valuable for homes near busy areas or the waterfront. Bay windows add extra light and space, fitting both classic and modern designs. For more details on the full range of secure uPVC windows available from Bowalker Windows Limited, visit our main service page.
Which Door Types Are Best Suited to Homes in Newhaven?
Newhaven’s coastal environment requires door types that are durable, weather-resistant, and secure. For homes in this area, composite doors, thermally broken aluminium doors, and high-grade uPVC doors are the most effective choices. Composite doors use a solid core and a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) skin, which means they will not warp, rot, or fade and provide strong insulation and modern multi-point locking for security. Thermally broken aluminium doors feature a built-in thermal barrier and marine-grade powder coating, supporting slim frames and large glass panes that maximise light while resisting salt spray and corrosion. High-grade uPVC doors are durable, cost-effective, and offer excellent insulation against cold coastal drafts. Bowalker Windows Limited recommends choosing doors with marine-grade frames, internal glazing for added security, and energy-efficient double or triple glazing to meet the demands of Newhaven’s climate.
Which Rooflight Types Are Suitable for Homes and Extensions in Newhaven?
Certain rooflight types are suitable for homes and extensions in Newhaven, where coastal weather, heritage property considerations, and the need for efficient natural light all play a role. Fixed rooflights offer a strong, double glazed solution that maximises daylight while maintaining weather resistance and security, making them ideal for flat or low-pitch roofs. Opening rooflights provide both light and ventilation, which is valuable in kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces where airflow is needed without compromising on high security or energy efficiency. Roof lanterns suit larger extensions or period properties, adding an architectural feature that increases usable light and complements traditional or modern designs. Walk-on rooflights are designed for terraces or roof gardens, providing a durable, secure surface that brings light into lower floors without sacrificing usable outdoor space. For tailored advice on the best rooflight solution for your property, consult a windows and door specialist in Newhaven.
When Should Roofline Products Be Replaced on a Newhaven Home?
Yes, roofline products should be replaced when they show clear signs of wear or damage, such as rot in timber fascias, persistent leaks from guttering, sagging soffits, or visible cracks and holes that compromise weather resistance. In Newhaven’s coastal environment, salt air and moisture accelerate deterioration, making issues like warped boards, peeling finishes, or water staining especially important to address quickly to protect the property’s structure. Regular inspection of fascias, soffits, and guttering helps identify these problems early, and Bowalker Windows Limited recommends seeking advice from a windows and door specialist Newhaven if any of these indicators are present.
Once you’ve identified the need for replacement, it’s reassuring to know that new installations by Bowalker Windows Limited are backed by a comprehensive 10-year insurance-backed guarantee.
What Guarantee Applies to Bowalker Installations in Newhaven?
Yes, every installation by Bowalker Windows Limited in Newhaven comes with a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee that covers both workmanship and product performance. This guarantee means that if any issue arises from the installation process or the products themselves within ten years, you have direct recourse for support and resolution. Homeowners benefit from long-term assurance, added resale value, and the confidence that their windows and doors are protected by a recognised specialist committed to high standards and reliability.
To make the most of this guarantee, it’s important to follow recommended maintenance practices for your new windows and doors.
How Should You Maintain Replacement Windows in Newhaven?
Maintaining replacement windows from Bowalker Windows Limited as your windows and door specialist Newhaven involves four key actions that keep high quality uPVC windows and high security features performing at their best.
- Regular cleaning of glass and frames with non-abrasive products
- Inspecting seals and gaskets for signs of wear or gaps
- Lubricating hinges, handles, and locking points annually
- Checking for condensation or visible damage to double glazed units
By following these simple steps, homeowners can ensure their windows and doors remain in top condition year after year.
How Should You Maintain New Doors in Newhaven?
Regular maintenance from Bowalker Windows Limited keeps new doors in Newhaven secure, long-lasting, and looking their best. The most effective approach covers four key actions:
- Gentle cleaning of door surfaces with a mild detergent and soft cloth
- Inspection and tightening of high security locks and handles
- Lubrication of hinges and moving parts with a suitable non-abrasive oil
- Checking and resealing weather strips to maintain weather resistance
How Should You Maintain Rooflights in Newhaven?
Maintaining rooflights as a windows and door specialist Newhaven involves six key actions that address the demands of a coastal environment.
- Regular cleaning of glass and frames with mild soapy water
- Clearing leaves and debris from the rooflight base and surrounding roof
- Cleaning gutters and drainage channels around the frame
- Lubricating hinges, locking pins, and moving parts annually
- Inspecting rubber seals and weather-stripping for cracks or gaps
- Checking metal frames for salt spray corrosion or exposed areas
- Seeking professional help for high or difficult-to-access rooflights
Can an Existing Rooflight Be Replaced Without Changing the Roof Opening?
Yes, an existing rooflight can usually be replaced without altering the roof opening if the new unit matches the size and type of the original and no structural changes are required. Direct replacement is possible when the rooflight’s dimensions, fixing method, and opening style remain the same, and the surrounding roof structure is in good condition. If you want a different size, a new style, or if building regulations require an upgrade, adjustments to the roof opening may be necessary. Bowalker Windows Limited can assess your property and advise on whether your rooflight can be replaced without changing the roof opening.
Before scheduling any replacement, it’s important to understand how to prepare for a professional assessment and installation.
How Should You Prepare for Your Newhaven Windows and Door Specialist's Visit?
Preparing for a visit from Bowalker Windows Limited as your windows and door specialist in Newhaven involves a clear set of steps for both the survey and installation phases.
- Clear window sills and access areas by removing ornaments, plants, and personal items so our specialist can take accurate measurements or work without obstruction.
- Move furniture away from windows and doors to create a direct path and working space for both the survey and installation teams.
- Remove window treatments such as curtains, blinds, and nets before installation day to prevent dust collection and allow a full working area.
- Take down wall décor, including pictures and mirrors near the installation zones, to avoid damage from vibration or dust during the process.
- Protect floors and nearby furniture with your own coverings in addition to any dust sheets we provide, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Ensure external access by unlocking gates and moving outdoor items like bins or patio furniture so we can inspect brickwork and thresholds or bring in materials safely.
- Arrange for pets and children to be kept safely away from work areas during the visit.
