What Our Happy Customers Say
Excellent service from a local independent company. Highly recommend.
Read moreI had replacement windows installed. Design and advice was good and cost was competitive. Installation was started in a good time to a good standard.
Read moreBowalker have been incredibly helpful and provided me with extremely useful information about the windows and doors at a property I moved into, previously supplied by them. Great customer service, really recommend
Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Historic Windows?
Historic windows are traditional-style windows designed to replicate the appearance and detailing of period properties whilst incorporating modern materials and performance features such as double glazing, thermally broken frames and multi-point locking. Common styles include double-hung sash, Palladian arch, leaded casement and cottage double-hung windows, each preserving authentic sightlines and glazing bar profiles. They are most commonly specified for listed buildings, conservation areas and Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian properties where period-accurate glazing is a planning requirement.
How Much Does Historic Window Installation Cost?
The cost of installing historic windows in the UK ranges from £800 to £2,800 or more per window, depending on frame material, glazing specification and window type. uPVC historic-style windows generally start from around £800 fitted, timber double-glazed options from £1,200, and aluminium or heritage aluminium profiles from £1,200 to £2,800 or more. Properties in London and the South East carry a 20-30% premium over these figures. Factors such as upper-floor access, structural lintel work and conservation area requirements will also influence the final price. Bowalker provides a no-obligation quote tailored to your property before any work is agreed.
What Materials Are Historic Windows Made From?
Historic windows are made from uPVC, timber or aluminium, each offering distinct benefits. Timber, including engineered options such as Accoya, provides the most authentic appearance and is frequently specified for listed buildings and conservation areas. uPVC offers strong thermal performance, rot resistance and low maintenance, with timber-effect foiled finishes suited to period properties. Aluminium provides slim sightlines, exceptional strength and a corrosion-resistant powder-coated finish with thermally broken profiles achieving low U-values. All three are compatible with double glazing and advanced weather-sealing systems.
How Long Does Historic Window Installation Take?
Historic window installation takes 1 to 2 hours per window. A standard 3-bedroom house takes about 2 days for complete installation, though this may vary based on the scope of work, size of windows and any required structural repairs.
What Guarantee Do You Provide on Historic Window Installation?
Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on all historic window installations, ensuring peace of mind and long-lasting performance. This covers both workmanship and installation quality, ensuring compliance with FENSA regulations.
Do I Need to Be at Home During the Installation?
No, you do not need to be at home during installation, provided we have agreed access to the property and your requirements have been confirmed beforehand. Our fully in-house installers carry out every installation to a consistent standard, with no subcontractors involved, so you can have complete confidence in who is on site. We will confirm all details, including window specifications, finish choices and access arrangements before the installation date, ensuring the work proceeds smoothly and exactly to your brief.
How Much Does It Cost to Replace Historic Windows?
Historic window replacement in the UK costs between £800 and £3,000 or more per window, depending on material, design complexity and conservation requirements. Standard uPVC replacements start from around £800 supplied and fitted, timber sash windows from £1,500 and hardwood options such as oak from £2,500 upwards, with bespoke conservation-grade replacements using slimline or vacuum glazing falling between £2,500 and £3,000. Bowalker’s team will advise during your free consultation on whether full replacement or selective restoration offers the better long-term value.
What Are the Maintenance Tips for Historic Windows?
To maintain historic windows, clean frames and glazing regularly using a mild detergent and soft cloth, check seals and EPDM gaskets annually to prevent draughts and water ingress, lubricate hinges, friction stays and multipoint locking mechanisms with a light oil or specialist window lubricant, and inspect sash cords and balance springs on double-hung windows for signs of wear. Timber frames should be repainted or resealed every three to five years using a microporous coating to protect against moisture and swelling, whilst uPVC and aluminium frames require minimal upkeep beyond regular cleaning.
