Types of Timber Windows We Install & Replace

Timber Sash Windows

Timber Sash Windows

Vertical sliding operation, authentic sash detailing and natural timber craftsmanship make timber sash windows particularly suited to Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian properties where period character must be preserved alongside improved comfort and performance. Engineered timber reduces the seasonal movement associated with solid wood whilst retaining an authentic finish and traditional appearance. We install and replace these windows using Low-E double or triple glazing, secure multipoint locking systems, traditional sash detailing, sash horns, glazing bars and durable microporous paint or stain finishes, maintaining architectural character whilst improving insulation, weather resistance and long-term durability throughout.

Timber Flush Windows

Timber Flush Windows

A sash that sits level within the frame creates the clean exterior profile that defines timber flush windows, closely replicating the appearance of traditional handcrafted joinery. Period properties, cottages and conservation areas benefit most from this design where authentic proportions and minimal frame lines are important. Our in-house installers install and replace these windows using engineered timber, high-performance Low-E glazing, warm-edge spacer bars and durable microporous paint or stain finishes, creating a traditional appearance whilst improving thermal efficiency, security and everyday reliability.

Timber Heritage Windows
Timber Heritage Windows

Carefully selected timber profiles, matched moulding details and period-appropriate glazing bar arrangements make timber heritage windows the considered choice for listed buildings, conservation areas and period homes where original architectural character must be preserved. Replacement windows in these settings may require listed building consent or planning approval depending on the property's designation and local requirements. Bowalker installs and replaces these windows using engineered timber, energy-efficient glazing and sympathetic microporous finishes, retaining historic character whilst improving insulation and long-term performance.

Timber Bay Windows
Timber Bay Windows

Natural timber frames and the classic projecting structure of a bay design combine in timber bay windows, making them well suited to Victorian homes, cottages and traditional properties where additional natural light, interior space and architectural character are all priorities. Engineered timber construction provides improved dimensional stability compared with solid wood across larger bay structures. We install and replace these windows using modern glazing systems, protective microporous finishes and secure hardware, creating a distinctive period feature whilst improving comfort, durability and thermal performance.

Timber Arched Windows
Timber Arched Windows

Accurately formed curved frames and the craftsmanship associated with traditional timber joinery give timber arched windows a distinctive character suited to period homes, heritage properties and feature elevations where natural materials and architectural detail matter. Each frame is manufactured from engineered timber to maintain improved dimensional stability, consistent sightlines and accurate proportions across the full arch. Our in-house installers install and replace these windows with energy-efficient Low-E glazing, durable protective coatings and carefully finished timber profiles, ensuring each installation complements the property's existing design whilst providing reliable long-term performance.

Timber Cottage Windows
Timber Cottage Windows

Traditional rural character and natural timber frames define timber cottage windows, making them well suited to cottages, countryside properties and character homes where maintaining an authentic appearance is a priority. Engineered timber profiles reduce the maintenance demands associated with solid wood whilst preserving the warmth and texture of natural grain. We install and replace these windows using Low-E glazing, Georgian bars, traditional ironmongery and protective microporous finishes, preserving traditional charm whilst improving insulation, security and resistance to everyday weather exposure.

Timber Historic Windows
Timber Historic Windows

Replicating traditional window styles with period-accurate profiles whilst incorporating modern performance features is what timber historic windows are designed to achieve. Listed buildings, conservation areas and heritage properties where architectural authenticity cannot be compromised benefit most from this approach. Bowalker Windows installs and replaces these windows with durable engineered timber construction, energy-efficient glazing and sympathetic detailing, protecting the building's historic character whilst delivering improved comfort, weather resistance and long-term reliability throughout.

Timber Picture Windows
Timber Picture Windows

Large glazed areas and the natural warmth of timber frames combine in timber picture windows, creating bright interiors and clear outdoor views without losing the authentic character associated with traditional properties. Rural homes, period renovations and architectural projects benefit most from this configuration. We install and replace these windows using engineered timber sections, high-performance Low-E glazing, argon-filled sealed units, warm-edge spacer bars and protective finishes, maximising daylight and visual connection with the outside whilst maintaining durability, insulation and the natural appeal timber provides.

Double Glazed Timber Windows

Double Glazed Timber Windows

Two panes of Low-E glass separated by an argon-filled sealed unit and warm-edge spacer bars allow double glazed timber windows to improve thermal efficiency and reduce external noise without altering the natural appearance of the timber frame. Most properties benefit from this combination of traditional character and modern glazing performance. Every double glazed timber window we install and replace is fitted with carefully finished engineered timber frames and precision-sealed glazing units, improving comfort and insulation whilst preserving the warmth and authenticity timber provides.

Triple Glazed Timber Windows
Triple Glazed Timber Windows

Exposed properties, heritage renovations and homes where energy efficiency sits alongside traditional styling as a priority benefit most from triple glazed timber windows, where three panes of Low-E glass separated by two insulating cavities reduce heat loss and external noise without altering the natural appearance of the frame. The additional glazing layer improves thermal and acoustic performance without requiring a heavier profile. Every triple glazed timber window we install and replace is fitted with engineered timber frames, warm-edge spacer bars and high-performance glazing, improving insulation and long-term durability throughout.

Obscure Glass Timber Windows
Obscure Glass Timber Windows

Bathrooms, entrance halls and ground-floor rooms benefit from obscure glass timber windows, where patterned privacy glazing limits direct visibility whilst allowing natural daylight to pass through the naturally warm timber frame. Glazing options range from light diffusion through to near-total opacity to suit different privacy requirements. We install and replace these windows with carefully finished timber frames and suitable privacy glazing, creating attractive installations that maintain comfort, natural character and reliable everyday performance throughout.

Learn More →
Satin Glass Timber Windows
Satin Glass Timber Windows

A smooth frosted surface that diffuses daylight evenly whilst limiting direct visibility makes satin glass timber windows well suited to bathrooms, hallways and entrance areas where practical privacy and traditional timber styling need to work together. The consistent satin finish avoids the texture variation of patterned obscure glazing. Our in-house installers fit and replace these windows with precision-finished engineered timber frames and energy-efficient glazing, creating a refined appearance that supports comfort, natural character and everyday usability.

Leaded Glass Timber Windows
Leaded Glass Timber Windows

Decorative leaded glazing patterns and natural timber frames come together in leaded glass timber windows, making them well suited to Victorian, Edwardian and cottage properties where heritage detailing is an important part of the building's identity. Lead patterns are carefully matched to existing designs where replacement is required. Bowalker Windows installs and replaces these windows with engineered timber construction, matched glazing patterns and modern insulated glazing units, maintaining period character whilst improving insulation, security and weather resistance.

Stained Glass Timber Windows
Stained Glass Timber Windows

Where decorative detail is central to a building's character, stained glass timber windows combine coloured glazing with traditional timber craftsmanship to create distinctive features in entrance halls, staircases and heritage properties. Each installation is planned around surrounding finishes to ensure colour, proportion and timber detailing work together. Glazing design, timber profiles and installation accuracy are carefully managed across every window we install and replace, with existing stained glass panels incorporated or encapsulated within insulated glazing units where appropriate, preserving character whilst delivering reliable modern performance.

Secondary Glazing of Timber Windows
Secondary Glazing of Timber Windows

Retaining original timber windows whilst improving their thermal and acoustic performance is precisely what secondary glazing for timber windows is designed to achieve. A discreet internal glazed panel installed behind the existing window reduces draughts, heat loss and external noise without altering the external appearance, making this particularly suitable for listed buildings, conservation areas and period properties. We install secondary glazing with careful surveying and precise alignment, improving comfort whilst maintaining the original character of the property.

Fixed Timber Windows

Fixed Timber Windows

Large glazed areas without opening sections and a refined traditional appearance define fixed timber windows, making them well suited to stairwells, feature elevations and rooms where ventilation is provided by surrounding openings. Engineered timber frames allow for greater dimensional stability and precise fitting across larger glazed areas. We install and replace these windows using high-performance glazing, durable protective finishes and accurate frame fitting, delivering strong insulation, reliable security and a considered traditional appearance throughout.

Casement Timber Windows

Casement Timber Windows

Traditional timber craftsmanship and practical side-hinged or top-hung ventilation come together in casement timber windows, making them well suited to cottages, period properties and modern homes where natural materials and reliable everyday performance are equally important. Engineered timber reduces seasonal movement whilst retaining the warmth and texture of natural grain. Our in-house installers install and replace these windows using energy-efficient glazing, secure multipoint locking and durable timber finishes, balancing traditional appearance, comfort and long-term usability.

Tilt and Turn Timber Windows
Tilt and Turn Timber Windows

Two opening functions within a carefully crafted timber frame make tilt and turn timber windows suited to modern homes and heritage-inspired renovations where flexible ventilation, easy internal cleaning and natural materials are priorities. The sash tilts inward at the top for everyday airflow or swings fully open for maintenance access. Bowalker Window installs and replaces these windows with secure hardware, high-performance glazing and carefully finished timber frames, combining practical functionality with the warmth of traditional craftsmanship.

Vertical Sliding Timber Windows
Vertical Sliding Timber Windows

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Timber windows are window systems made from natural wood, valued for their traditional appearance, insulating properties and ability to complement period and contemporary architecture. Modern timber windows often use engineered timber, which improves stability and resistance to warping compared with traditional solid timber. They provide a durable, sustainable alternative to uPVC and aluminium whilst maintaining a natural appearance.

Timber window installation usually takes 1 to 3 days depending on the number of windows, property access and the complexity of the fitting work. Standard replacements may be completed within a shorter timeframe, whilst bespoke designs and larger projects may require additional preparation and finishing. Our in-house installers complete every installation with careful measurement, accurate fitting and final quality checks.

Clean timber windows using warm water, a small amount of mild washing-up liquid and a soft microfibre cloth, working across the frame, sills, glazing bars and rubber seals to remove dirt and grime. Avoid abrasive cleaners, white spirit or solvent-based products that can strip protective coatings or damage the timber surface. Inspect frames annually for signs of flaking paint, cracked putty, damaged seals or moisture ingress, and repaint or treat with a microporous finish every five to eight years to maintain weather resistance and long-term performance.

Start with your property’s architectural style and planning requirements, then consider maintenance expectations and energy-efficiency goals to determine the right timber windows for your home. Traditional sash and flush designs suit period and conservation properties, whilst modern timber casement windows work well across a wider range of property types. During your consultation, we assess your property and recommend timber windows that balance appearance, durability, energy efficiency and long-term maintenance requirements.

Consider sash windows with decorative horns and traditional glazing bars for period homes, flush casements with putty glazing for conservation areas, leaded or stained glass panels for entrance halls and large fixed picture windows that open up garden or rural views when planning timber window designs for your property. Frame profile, microporous paint colour, glazing bar arrangement and ironmongery should all be selected together. Matching these choices with existing doors and architectural features creates a consistent and sympathetic exterior appearance throughout.

Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on qualifying timber window installation and replacement work. Our FENSA registration (Reg. 33081) confirms that applicable replacement installations meet current Building Regulations for safety, thermal performance and installation standards. We provide the relevant certification after completion, giving homeowners confidence in the quality of the installation.
