What Are the Benefits of Installing Picture Windows?

Installing picture windows maximises natural light, creates uninterrupted outdoor views, improves energy efficiency, strengthens security, reduces maintenance and enhances architectural appeal. Their fixed design removes moving parts and allows larger areas of glass, helping homeowners create brighter interiors whilst benefiting from dependable thermal performance and a clean, uncluttered appearance.

The eight benefits of installing picture windows are:

picture windows

Maximum Natural Light

Picture windows use a wide, uninterrupted pane of glass to bring more daylight into the room. Increased natural light can make interiors feel brighter, more open and more connected to the surrounding landscape.

Creates Unobstructed Views

The fixed design eliminates mullions, hinges and handles across the main glazed area. This provides a clear view of gardens, countryside, cityscapes or other outdoor features.

Improves Energy Efficiency

Picture windows do not open, which reduces the number of joints where draughts may develop. Double or triple glazing, low-emissivity glass and multi-chambered uPVC, thermally broken aluminium and engineered timber frames also help reduce heat loss and maintain stable indoor temperatures.

Requires Minimal Maintenance

Fixed picture windows have no hinges, handles or opening mechanisms that require regular adjustment or lubrication. uPVC and aluminium frames usually need only occasional cleaning, whilst timber frames require periodic coating maintenance.

Enhances Security

Picture windows have no opening sash, locks or accessible hinges that intruders can target. Laminated or toughened glass can also be specified where additional impact resistance or security is required.

Improves Acoustic Comfort

Sealed glazing units and accurately fitted frames can reduce external noise. Acoustic or laminated glass may provide further sound reduction for homes near roads, railways or busy urban areas.

Creates a Clean Architectural Feature

Large areas of uninterrupted glass suit contemporary homes, extensions and open-plan living spaces. Picture windows can also be used in period properties when the frame proportions and surrounding details complement the original architecture.

Supports Flexible Design

Picture windows can be installed in rectangular, arched, circular, geometric or floor-to-ceiling formats, making them adaptable to a wide range of property styles and architectural requirements. They can also be combined with casement opening sections to introduce ventilation without interrupting the main view.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Picture windows are large fixed windows designed to maximise natural light and provide wide, uninterrupted outdoor views. They do not open and have no moving parts, which helps improve security, reduce maintenance and limit draughts. Picture windows are commonly installed in living rooms, stairwells, extensions and feature elevations, either as standalone units or alongside opening windows that provide ventilation.

A standard picture window installation can often be completed within 1-2 hours, although larger or heavier units may take a full day. Installation time depends on the dimensions of the glass, frame material, access to the opening and whether structural preparation is required. Whole-property projects with several large windows may take multiple days. Our in-house team surveys every opening in advance and plans the work to ensure a secure, accurately aligned installation.

Clean picture windows with warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth before using a non-abrasive glass cleaner on the glazing. A long-handled cleaning tool may help with large or high-level windows that cannot be reached safely from the floor. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals because they can damage frame finishes, glazing seals and specialist coatings. External glass at height should be cleaned by a suitably equipped professional.

The right picture windows depend on the size of the opening, the view, the orientation of the room and your preferred frame material. Large aluminium frames suit wide contemporary openings, timber complements period properties and uPVC provides a practical low-maintenance option. You should also consider thermal performance, solar gain, privacy and whether adjacent opening windows are needed for ventilation. During your consultation, we assess these factors and recommend a suitable design.

Picture windows can frame gardens, countryside views or architectural features and create a strong focal point within the room. Popular designs include floor-to-ceiling glazing, corner windows, geometric shapes, arched tops and fixed central panels with opening casement side windows where natural ventilation is required. Matching the frame colour with existing doors, rooflines or external joinery creates a consistent appearance, while window seats, low-level frames and carefully positioned furniture help maximise both the view and natural daylight.

Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on every qualifying picture window installation we complete. Our FENSA registration, Reg. 33081, confirms that applicable replacement work complies with current Building Regulations for installation and thermal performance. We provide the relevant certification and documentation after completion, giving homeowners a clear record of the work and additional protection for the installation.
