Types of Secondary Glazing We Install and Replace

secondary-glazing

Fixed Secondary Glazing

Fixed secondary glazing is the most thermally efficient option in our range, as the sealed panel creates an unbroken insulating barrier with no moving parts or gap-prone mechanisms.
Well suited to north-facing rooms, hallways and ground-floor windows in listed buildings or conservation areas, each unit is built with slimline aluminium frames, energy-efficient glass and fitted internally by our in-house team to complement the existing window surround. It is also among the most cost-effective systems we offer for heat retention and draught reduction.
secondary-glazing-horizontal-sliding

Lift-out Secondary Glazing

Lift-out secondary glazing uses a panel that sits within the window reveal and can be removed by hand, making it a practical choice for homeowners who want the flexibility to take the glazing down during warmer months or for easy cleaning.
It is popular in traditional homes and period properties where a permanent fixture is not desirable, and in rooms where occasional full access to the window opening is needed. Our installers fit each panel with energy-efficient glass and slimline aluminium frames, ensuring a secure, draught-resistant fit when in place and straightforward removal when required.
secondary-glazing-hinged-windows

Hinged Secondary Glazing

Hinged secondary glazing features a panel that swings open on side or top hinges, allowing straightforward access to the original window for ventilation or cleaning.
It is a versatile option for bedrooms and living rooms where the window is opened regularly, as the panel can be pulled open quickly and secured flat against the wall or reveal. Side-hinged units suit standard casement windows, while top-hinged panels suit windows with restricted floor clearance. Each system uses energy-efficient glass and slimline aluminium frames for effective thermal insulation and noise reduction when closed.
Secondary-Glazing-HeavyDutyHS

Horizontal Sliding Secondary Glazing

Horizontal sliding secondary glazing features panels that slide side to side along a track, making it a practical solution for wide window openings such as those found in bay windows, living rooms and open-plan extensions.
The sliding mechanism allows easy access to the original window for ventilation without the panel obstructing the room. Fitted with reinforced sliding tracks, energy-efficient glass and durable aluminium frames, horizontal sliding secondary glazing provides reliable thermal insulation, effective noise reduction and smooth everyday operation in both modern and traditionally styled properties.
Secondary-glazing-HeavyDutyVS

Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing

Designed to replicate the movement of traditional sash windows, vertical sliding secondary glazing features panels that raise and lower within the window reveal.
It is the preferred choice for period properties, Georgian and Victorian terraces and conservation area homes where the appearance of the original sash window must be maintained. Panels slide in separate channels, allowing independent ventilation through either section. Our installers fit each system with energy-efficient glass, durable aluminium frames and balanced sliding mechanisms for reliable everyday use and a sympathetic finish.
secondary-glazing-windows

Magnetic Secondary Glazing

Using a flexible magnetic strip fixed to the window reveal, magnetic secondary glazing allows the glazing panel to be attached and removed quickly without tools or fixings.
The most straightforward system to take down for cleaning or seasonal use, it is especially well suited to irregularly shaped openings, arched windows and listed building interiors where drilling into surrounds is not permitted. Our installers fit each panel with energy-efficient glass and a precision-cut frame for a draught-resistant seal and discreet finish.

Acoustic Secondary Glazing

We install acoustic secondary glazing using laminated glass with a specialist interlayer that absorbs sound energy, significantly reducing external noise transmission compared to standard glazing.
Particularly suited to properties near busy roads, railway lines, flight paths and urban centres, each system is fitted with durable aluminium frames, secure glazing mechanisms and condensation-resistant finishes. When combined with the existing primary window, acoustic secondary glazing achieves substantial reductions in perceived noise levels, creating a noticeably quieter interior environment with long-term thermal performance.

Low-E Secondary Glazing

Fitted with a microscopic metallic coating on the glass surface, Low-E secondary glazing reflects radiant heat back into the room during winter while limiting solar heat gain in summer.
The result is a more stable internal temperature throughout the year and reduced reliance on heating and cooling. Particularly effective in rooms with large window areas, each unit is fitted with slimline aluminium frames, secure glazing mechanisms and condensation-resistant finishes for reliable long-term thermal performance in both modern and period properties..

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Secondary glazing involves installing a separate internal glass or plastic panel behind existing windows to create an additional insulating barrier. This glazing system delivers a double-glazed effect without replacing or altering the original windows and is commonly used to improve thermal insulation, reduce outside noise and minimise draughts.

Secondary glazing is well suited for listed buildings, conservation area properties and older homes with single-pane windows where preserving the original window appearance is important. It is also suitable for properties in noisy urban locations and for homeowners seeking a cost-effective solution to reduce draughts, improve insulation and minimise outside noise without replacing existing historic window frames.

Secondary glazing is fitted inside the window, with a separate glass or acrylic panel installed on the interior side of the existing window frame. This internal glazing system creates an additional insulating barrier without replacing or altering the original external windows, making it suitable for period properties, listed buildings and homes requiring improved thermal efficiency and noise reduction.

Secondary glazing installation costs between £300 and £800 or more, depending on the window size, glazing style, material specification and installation requirements. Acoustic glass, Low-E coatings and bespoke configurations will increase the overall cost.

Secondary glazing installation takes between a few hours and 1 to 2 days, depending on the number of windows, glazing style and property requirements. Standard secondary glazing installations for single rooms are often completed within one day, while bespoke glazing systems, larger properties and complex window configurations require additional installation time.

Yes, secondary glazing is suitable for listed buildings because it provides improved insulation and noise reduction without replacing or altering the original historic windows. As the glazing system is fully reversible and fitted internally, it helps preserve the property’s traditional appearance while meeting conservation requirements.

Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on secondary glazing installation and replacement services, covering installation workmanship and fitting quality for added peace of mind. Our secondary glazing installations are completed by a fully in-house team of glazing installers and supported by FENSA-registered compliance standards to ensure accurate fitting, improved insulation performance and long-term reliability.

You are welcome to be present during installation, though it is not required. As long as access and any specific preferences are agreed beforehand, our team will complete the work professionally and leave the property tidy.

The cost to replace secondary glazing ranges from £200 to £500+ per window, depending on the glazing style, window size, glass specification and installation requirements. Acoustic glazing, bespoke glazing systems and larger window configurations increase the overall replacement cost due to additional materials and fitting complexity.

Maintenance tips for secondary glazing include cleaning glazing panels with mild soapy water, lubricating sliding tracks, checking weather seals regularly and maintaining proper ventilation to reduce condensation build-up. Regular maintenance also helps preserve thermal efficiency, smooth glazing operation and long-term performance.
