Types Of Windows We Install
uPVC Sash Windows
uPVC Sash Windows
uPVC sash windows combine classic period aesthetics with durable, low-maintenance construction that never rots, warps, or requires repainting. Featuring vertical sliding panels, multi-chambered frames, and energy-efficient double glazing, these sash windows enhance thermal insulation, street noise reduction, and security. A tilt-in feature allows effortless cleaning from inside your home. Bowalker fits uPVC sash windows with authentic woodgrain foils, deep bottom rails, and run-through sash horns to deliver traditional period charm backed by modern performance.
Learn More →Aluminium Sash Windows
Aluminium Sash Windows
Aluminium sash windows feature strong, lightweight metal frames that combine classic heritage style with ultra-slim sightlines and maximum natural light. Built with internal thermal breaks, modern sliding balances, and rigid frames, they prevent heat loss while delivering superior security and weather resistance. Unlike timber, these durable windows will not rot, warp, or swell, lasting over 40 years with minimal upkeep. At Bowalker, our in-house sash window installers fit these engineered aluminium systems with long-lasting powder coatings, providing a clean, modern aesthetic that performs reliably for decades.
Learn More →Crafted from high-grade engineered softwood, redwood, or durable hardwoods like Sapele and Accoya, timber sash windows combine traditional architectural aesthetics with modern thermal performance. Using multi-layer construction with opposing wood grains, they prevent the warping, swelling, and twisting common in solid timber. These sash windows also feature 24mm argon-filled double glazing and key-operated fitch locks for security. At Bowalker, we fit these premium sashes with micro-porous factory finishes, delivering natural thermal mass, acoustic dampening, and authentic historical character.
Learn More →Double Glazed Sash Windows
Double Glazed Sash Windows
Double-glazed sash windows feature two panes of high-performance glass separated by an argon gas-filled cavity and warm-edge spacer bars. Coated with low-emissivity (Low-E) films, these units retain heat three to five times better than single glazing, eliminating cold spots and significantly reducing annual heating bills. Along with superior thermal insulation, the sealed double-glazed construction acts as an effective soundproofing barrier against outdoor traffic and street noise. Our in-house sash window installers fit these energy-efficient units to eliminate draft infiltration while maintaining slim frame proportions suited to traditional property designs.
Learn More →Triple Glazed Sash Windows
Triple Glazed Sash Windows
Triple-glazed sash windows are traditional vertical-sliding frames built with three glass panes and two gas-filled insulating gaps. Designed for ultimate energy efficiency, these multi-layer units drastically lower U-values to keep indoor temperatures stable regardless of extreme external weather. Beyond lowering heating bills, their acoustic dampening effectively blocks out heavy traffic and urban sounds while preserving classic period aesthetics. At Bowalker, our in-house sash window installers fit these specialised units for exposed coastal locations, north-facing elevations, or street-facing rooms where maximum thermal performance, soundproofing, and enhanced security are essential.
Learn More →Obscure glass sash windows incorporate textured or patterned surfaces that blur visibility while allowing natural daylight to flood into the home. Graded on a privacy scale from 1 (least obscure) to 5 (most obscure), these sash windows conceal shapes and figures day and night without requiring blinds or curtains. They are ideal for bathrooms, stairwells, and overlooked ground-floor rooms. Bowalker’s in-house sash window installers fit these custom obscure glass units to match your exact aesthetic and privacy preferences.
Learn More →Featuring a smooth, acid-etched external surface, satin glass sash windows combine traditional vertically sliding frames with privacy glass, delivering a sophisticated matte finish alongside modern thermal efficiency. Unlike standard patterned glass, the satin surface diffuses incoming sunlight evenly across the room, obscuring direct views without blocking natural light. Double-glazed units offer U-values as low as 1.2 W/m²K alongside smooth sliding mechanics and easy-clean tilt functions. Our certified installation team installs satin glass sash windows to provide a seamless balance of privacy, interior brightness, and long-term energy savings for bathrooms and entryways.
Learn More →Leaded glass sash windows feature decorative lead strips arranged in traditional square, diamond, or bespoke geometric patterns across the glass panes. Designed to preserve and replicate iconic architectural details seen across Victorian, Edwardian, and 1930s properties, these units maintain authentic period character without compromising structural integrity. To deliver both historical accuracy and modern energy efficiency, Bowalker’s in-house installers fit these decorative leaded sashes as authentic single-glazed panels for listed restorations or encapsulate the leadwork within double-glazed units to eliminate draughts and heat loss.
Learn More →A stained glass window is a decorative glazing feature made from coloured or patterned glass pieces arranged into bespoke designs that add privacy, character and visual interest to a property. We install stained glass windows in a range of styles, including leaded, copper foil, painted or enamel, faceted and fused or kiln-formed designs, with options to suit both traditional and contemporary homes. Our stained glass windows combine durable framing, weather-resistant finishes and reinforced glazing to support long-term performance, while helping improve insulation, kerb appeal and interior character.
Learn More →Utilising specialised reflective technology, mirror glass sash windows create a one-way mirror effect during daylight hours, preventing onlookers from seeing inside while preserving clear, unobstructed views outward. Beyond total daytime privacy for street-level rooms, the reflective surface acts as a powerful solar control barrier by reducing glare, blocking harmful UV rays, and minimising solar heat gain. Bowalker’s dedicated installation team measures and fits these dual-action mirror glass units to keep your living spaces cool, comfortable, and completely private throughout the day.
Learn More →Designed as a non-disruptive insulation solution, secondary glazing sash windows involve mounting a discreet, fully operable internal frame on the room side of your existing window. The resulting air gap creates an acoustic and thermal barrier that slashes draught infiltration, lowers heating bills, and reduces external noise by up to 80%. It is the ideal upgrade for Grade I and Grade II listed buildings or strict conservation areas where original single-glazed frames cannot be replaced. Bowalker’s licensed sash window installers fit these secondary glazing sash windows to enhance comfort and energy efficiency without compromising historical authenticity.
Learn More →Decorative bars fixed to the glazing surface recreate the raised, three-dimensional appearance of traditional divided-light joinery, making astragal bar sash windows suitable for period properties where additional depth and shadow lines are important. Unlike internal Georgian bars, astragal bars create a more pronounced profile that closely replicates original multi-pane character. To complement each property's existing finishes, Bowalker installs and replaces these windows with accurately positioned bar layouts, energy-efficient sealed units and matched frame finishes.
Learn More →Evenly spaced horizontal and vertical glazing bars recreate the symmetrical multi-pane appearance associated with Georgian architecture, making Georgian bar sash windows suitable for period properties, conservation areas and heritage-style homes where balanced divided-light detailing is important. Modern Georgian bars are typically positioned within the sealed glazing unit, creating a flatter appearance with a smooth external glass surface that is easier to clean. We install and replace Georgian bar sash windows with carefully configured glazing layouts, energy-efficient sealed units and secure sash mechanisms in uPVC, aluminium and timber frames.
Learn More →Fixed Sash Windows
Fixed Sash Windows
Engineered to match the exact visual profiles and frame proportions of adjacent sliding units, fixed sash windows preserve complete architectural symmetry across your property's facade. Commonly specified for bay window side-lights, high-level elevations, or multi-light configurations where ventilation is unnecessary, they eliminate moving parts to maximise airtightness, structural security, and overall thermal efficiency. Choosing Bowalker ensures these fixed panels are seamlessly integrated into your window layout, maintaining perfectly balanced sightlines alongside maximum draught prevention.
Learn More →Blending traditional sash aesthetics with versatile dual-action hardware, tilt-and-turn sash windows offer modern operational flexibility. A single turn of the handle tilts the sash inward for safe, draught-free ventilation, while a second turn opens it fully inward like a door for complete access. This dual functionality makes maintaining your windows effortless, especially on upper storeys. Our sash window installers fit these inward-opening sash windows to give multi-storey homes and apartments an ideal combination of classic styling, easy internal cleaning, and enhanced safety.
Learn More →The vertical sliding sash window is the traditional double-hung design featuring two sashes that slide past one another within an outer frame. Operating on smooth spring balances or traditional weight-and-pulley systems, both sashes move independently to enable dual ventilation, drawing cool air in through the lower opening while letting warm air escape through the top. Upgrading your home with Bowalker ensures these classic vertical sliders are fitted with integrated travel restrictors and multi-point locks, delivering effortless operation, timeless period charm, and top-tier security.
Learn More →Featuring multiple hinged panels that slide and fold neatly to one side along a concealed track system, bifold sash windows create wide, unobstructed openings to connect indoor spaces with outdoor patios and gardens. This sash window design combines classic sash sightlines with modern folding hardware, offering versatile ventilation control and maximum natural light. Choosing Bowalker ensures these custom configurations are expertly installed, transforming kitchen extensions and open-plan living areas with effortless operation, weather-tight seals, and seamless outdoor flow.

Found answers to questions we didn’t realise about the installation and though we haven’t yet finished the project the windows are a very exciting and big step forward for us. Would recommend this company and this team without hesitation. Thank you!

Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Sash Windows?
A sash window is a traditional window system that uses one or more movable panels, known as sashes, which slide vertically or horizontally within a frame. These windows feature glazing bars, timber or uPVC frames and balanced mechanisms that allow smooth operation. Bowalker installs sash windows with modern upgrades such as double glazing, draught-proofing and secure locking systems, combining traditional style with improved thermal efficiency and functionality.
How Much Does Sash Window Installation Cost?
Sash window installation at Bowalker starts from around £1,100, including vertical sliding sash windows, with example prices ranging from £1,103 to £1,269 for standard uPVC vertical sliding sash window options. Installation-only costs start from £225 including VAT, covering professional fitting, surveying, disposal of the old windows where required, and 10-year insurance-backed guarantee for added reassurance. The final cost of a sash window installation can vary depending on the window material, size, specification and manufacturer selected, so contact Bowalker today for a more accurate sash window installation estimate tailored to your property.
How Long Does Sash Window Installation Take?
Sash window installation by Bowalkers takes a full day for 2 sash windows with a team of 2 installers, depending on the project’s complexity and the property’s condition. The overall installation timeframe can vary based on several factors, including the number of windows, whether the work involves full sash window replacement or refurbishment, the age and structure of the property (particularly older or listed buildings), bespoke window requirements, and site access conditions.
How to Clean Sash Windows?
To clean sash windows, ensure you prepare the area and equipment, remove loose dirt and dust, clean the frames and glass, dry all surfaces thoroughly, and maintain the moving parts to keep them operating smoothly. Following these steps helps preserve their appearance, maintain smooth operation and extend their service life, regardless of whether they are made from timber, uPVC or aluminium.
- Collect a step stool, high-GSM microfibre cloths, a soft brush, and a bucket of warm water mixed with mild, pH-neutral dish soap.
- Pick a dry, overcast day so the cleaning solution doesn’t dry too fast in direct sunlight and leave streaks.
- Move nearby furniture three feet back, tie up curtains, and lay drop cloths beneath the window to catch drips.
- Sweep sills, corners, and meeting rails with a soft vacuum brush to remove loose grit before applying any liquids.
- Dislodge trapped dirt from the inner channels, then wipe down the timber frames using a well-wrung, damp microfibre cloth.
- Apply cleaner directly to your cloth rather than the window, wipe in S-shaped patterns, and finish with a squeegee for a streak-free shine.
- Wipe down all sills, glass edges, and timber joints immediately with a dry cloth to prevent water spots and wood rot.
- Spray a silicone-based lubricant onto the side tracks and pulleys, then test the sashes to ensure smooth sliding and locking.
How Do I Choose the Right Sash Windows for My Home?
To choose the right sash windows for your home, consider your property’s architectural style, the most suitable frame material, the required glazing specification, your energy efficiency and security requirements, and your available budget. Evaluating these factors together helps ensure your new sash windows complement the appearance of your home while providing reliable thermal performance, ventilation, durability and long-term value.
- Assess your property’s style and planning requirements
- Choose the most suitable frame material.
- Select the appropriate glazing specification.
- Consider energy efficiency, security and ventilation.
- Arrange a professional survey before making a decision.
What Sash Window Design Ideas Can You Consider for Your Home?
Consider traditional multi-pane bar layouts like six-over-six or two-over-two configurations, classic dual-colour frame finishes to contrast interior and exterior decor, or custom bay window designs to maximise room depth. Incorporating stained or leaded glass introduces timeless artistic character, while satin or mirror glass offers sleek, modern privacy for street-level views. Partnering with Bowalker gives you access to fully customizable, bespoke options designed to transform your window openings into striking architectural features.
What Guarantee Do You Provide on Sash Window Installation?
We provide a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on all sash window installations, ensuring peace of mind and long-lasting performance. This covers workmanship and installation quality, giving homeowners confidence that their sash windows are installed to the highest professional standards and comply with FENSA regulations.
