Types of Windows We Fit Astragal Bars

casement-windows

Casement Windows

At Bowalker, we install and replace astragal bars on casement windows to suit your property's character, whether modern, Victorian or period. Their side‑hinged openings give clear glazing sections that the bars divide into a classic multi‑pane layout without getting in the way of how the window works.
Our in‑house installers fit each bar against energy‑efficient glazing, secure locking and weather‑resistant frames, sharpening the look of the window and lifting your home's kerb appeal in one tidy, full‑service visit.
tilt and turn window

Tilt & Turn Windows

Tilt and turn windows tilt inward for ventilation and swing fully open for access, and we add astragal bars without disturbing either function. Each bar is aligned so the glazing reads as a traditional multi-pane unit while the window still operates exactly as it should. Built in aluminium or uPVC with modern double glazing,
the result holds its warmth, lets you control airflow and asks little of you beyond the occasional wipe, period detailing on a window that behaves like a contemporary one.
sash windows

Sash Windows

Our installers fit astragal bars on sash windows so the finish honours how these windows were originally drawn while meeting modern home expectations. The vertically sliding sashes provide controlled ventilation, and the bars sit across the glass to recreate the Georgian and Victorian pane patterns the style is known for.
Whether the frames are timber, aluminium or uPVC, we pair them with double glazing for warmth and security, keeping the unmistakable sash character without the draughts that used to come with it.
fixed windows

Fixed Windows

Fixed windows do not open. Instead, they exist to pull in light and frame a clear view, which makes the glazing pattern the one thing you really notice. We fit astragal bars across them to bring back a traditional,
structured layout while leaving the sealed unit completely intact. Our fitters keep the alignment exact and the seal airtight, so you gain the symmetry and period detail without losing any of the insulation that the fixed unit was built to give.
roof window

Roof Windows

Roof windows sit in the roofline on a centre‑pivot or top hinge, bringing daylight and fresh air into lofts and attic rooms. We position astragal bars across them for a balanced, multi‑pane look that never gets in the way of opening or closing the window.
Working up at height, our in‑house team keeps the seal weather‑tight around the double‑glazed unit, so the room stays warm and evenly lit whatever the weather is doing above it.
bay windows

Bay Windows

Bay windows step outward in several angled sections, so the trick with astragal bars is making the pattern read as one continuous design rather than three or four separate windows. We line the bars up across every facet so the glazing matches whether you're looking from inside or out.
Fixed securely into the double‑glazed units, each bar holds its place, the seals stay sound, and the bay keeps its crisp, even rhythm of light for the long run.
uPVC Sash Window 9

Bow Windows

Bow windows curve outward across several panels to give a soft, rounded bay and plenty of light. We follow that curve with the astragal bars so the pane pattern flows unbroken from one panel to the next rather than stopping and starting.
Fixed firmly into the double‑glazed units, the bars keep the curve structurally sound, properly sealed and visually crisp, so light spreads evenly across the whole sweep for years to come.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Astragal bars are decorative, surface-mounted glazing bars fixed to both the internal and external sides of modern double-glazed windows to replicate the traditional multi-pane appearance of historic Georgian sash windows. These bars visually divide a single large glass unit into smaller sections, such as 6 or 9 panes, reflecting original glass design methods without using separate glass pieces.

Astragal bar installation costs between £200 and £400 per window, including parts and labour. The final cost depends on factors such as window size, number of panes created, bar design style, such as Georgian or custom patterns and the type of glazing system used. Custom configurations or larger window units may require additional fitting time, which can influence overall pricing while ensuring accurate alignment and a consistent divided-light finish.

Astragal bar installation takes 30 to 60 minutes per window, depending on the size, the number of glazing sections, and the bar design. This timeframe includes careful alignment and secure fixing to ensure a consistent divided-light appearance and proper integration with the existing glazing system.

Bowalker Windows Limited offers a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on all astragal bar installations, providing assurance of durability and reliable performance. This guarantee covers fitting precision and workmanship quality, ensuring each astragal bar is securely installed, accurately aligned and meets FENSA compliance standards for long-term performance and visual consistency.

Replacing existing astragal bars costs between £150 and £800 per window. The lower end reflects a straightforward like‑for‑like bar swap, while the upper end applies where bars are replaced alongside new double‑glazed units or on larger, multi‑pane sash and bay windows. In most cases, replacing the bars is more precise and quicker than a full glass replacement, particularly on traditional or period‑style windows.
