Types of Vertical Sliding Windows We Install and Replace
Vertical Sliding Sash Windows
Vertical Sliding Sash Windows
One or two vertically moving sashes provide controlled ventilation whilst retaining the proportions associated with traditional sash joinery, making vertical sliding sash windows particularly suited to Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian properties. Depending on the window system, modern vertical sliders can use spring balance, counterbalance or other sash mechanisms to provide smooth operation while retaining traditional sightlines. Bowalker installs and replaces vertical sliding sash windows with energy-efficient glazing, secure locking hardware and carefully proportioned frames selected around the property's architectural style.
Learn More →Vertical Sliding Bay Windows
Vertical Sliding Bay Windows
Projecting bay configurations with vertically operating sashes combine ventilation and natural light with the architectural depth associated with many Victorian and Edwardian properties. Maintaining consistent sash proportions, meeting rails and sightlines across the central and angled sections requires careful surveying and frame alignment. We install and replace vertical sliding bay windows with energy-efficient sealed units, secure locking hardware and accurately aligned frames across each section of the bay.
Learn More →Vertical Sliding Cottage Windows
Vertical Sliding Cottage Windows
Traditional sash-style operation, period-inspired proportions, Georgian bars and heritage-style profiles make vertical sliding cottage windows a practical choice for cottages, farmhouses and rural properties where maintaining traditional character is important. Woodgrain uPVC and engineered timber frame options complement the property's existing materials and finishes without introducing a visually inconsistent replacement. We install and replace vertical sliding cottage windows with energy-efficient sealed units, secure fittings and smooth balance mechanisms to combine traditional appearance with modern thermal performance.
Learn More →Vertical Sliding Historic Windows
Vertical Sliding Historic Windows
Carefully matched profiles, traditional sightlines and period-inspired detailing distinguish vertical sliding historic windows from standard sash replacements, making them suitable for Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian properties where retaining architectural character is important. Frame sections, glazing bars, sash proportions and hardware can be selected to complement the appearance of existing windows, subject to relevant planning or conservation requirements where applicable. Bowalker installs and replaces vertical sliding historic windows with carefully specified frames and energy-efficient glazing, balancing traditional appearance with modern thermal performance and everyday operation.
Learn More →Vertical Sliding uPVC Windows
Vertical Sliding uPVC Windows
Low-maintenance construction, multi-chambered profiles and good thermal performance make uPVC a practical frame material for vertical sliding windows in both traditional and contemporary properties. Woodgrain foil finishes, Georgian bars and heritage-style hardware can recreate familiar sash-window detailing without the regular repainting associated with traditional timber. We install and replace vertical sliding uPVC windows with energy-efficient Low-E sealed units, secure locking hardware and smooth balance mechanisms, with a range of colour and woodgrain finishes available.
Learn More →Vertical Sliding Timber Windows
Vertical Sliding Timber Windows
Natural character and traditional joinery detailing make timber vertical sliding windows particularly suited to period, heritage and traditionally styled properties. Engineered timber can provide improved dimensional stability compared with traditional solid timber while retaining the natural grain and appearance associated with wooden sash windows. Our in-house installers fit vertical sliding timber windows with energy-efficient sealed units, suitable locking hardware and durable microporous paint or stain finishes, combining traditional appearance with modern glazing performance.
Learn More →Double Glazed Vertical Sliding Windows
Double Glazed Vertical Sliding Windows
Two panes of glass separated by an insulating cavity allow double-glazed vertical sliding windows to improve thermal performance compared with traditional single glazing whilst retaining familiar sash-style proportions and operation. Low-E glass, argon-filled sealed units and warm-edge spacer bars can be combined within compatible window systems to reduce heat transfer through the glazing. We install and replace double-glazed vertical sliding windows with carefully specified sealed units and suitable sash mechanisms, with qualifying replacement windows specified to meet applicable Building Regulations requirements.
Learn More →Triple Glazed Vertical Sliding Windows
Triple Glazed Vertical Sliding Windows
Where the frame and sash mechanism are suitable, triple-glazed vertical sliding windows combine three panes of glass with two insulating cavities to provide enhanced thermal performance in a sash-style configuration. The additional weight of triple glazing requires compatible frames and appropriately specified balance mechanisms to maintain smooth operation. Bowalker installs and replaces triple-glazed vertical sliding windows where suitable, using compatible glazing, frames and sash mechanisms selected to meet the required performance and operation.
Learn More →Privacy glazing combined with vertically operating sashes allows natural light and ventilation into bathrooms, landings and overlooked rooms whilst limiting clear views through the glass. Pilkington Texture Glass offers five privacy levels, ranging from Level 1 for the least obscuration through to Level 5 for the greatest obscuration, allowing the level of privacy to be selected around the room and its location. We install and replace obscure glass vertical sliding windows with suitable privacy glazing, secure locking hardware and smooth balance mechanisms for reliable everyday operation.
Learn More →The smooth, even translucent finish of satin glass diffuses natural light consistently across the pane without the surface texture of patterned obscure glass, making it a popular choice for bathrooms, bedrooms and privacy-sensitive spaces where a cleaner, more uniform appearance is preferred. Satin glass can complement traditional timber and woodgrain uPVC frames, providing privacy without the stronger visual pattern of textured obscure glass. Our window installers fit satin glass vertical sliding windows with precisely fitted sealed units, secure hardware and smooth sliding mechanisms for reliable performance.

What Are the Benefits of Installing Vertical Sliding Windows?
Vertical sliding windows combine traditional sash-style appearance with practical ventilation, space-efficient operation and modern glazing options. When correctly specified, they can incorporate energy-efficient glazing, weather seals and modern locking hardware while maintaining proportions suited to period and traditional properties.
Eight key benefits of vertical sliding windows include:
Provides Flexible Ventilation
Vertically moving sashes allow airflow to be adjusted without requiring the window to project significantly into or outside the room.
Supports Thermal Performance
Double or triple glazing, Low-E glass, insulated frames and suitable weather seals can help reduce heat loss compared with older single-glazed windows.
Uses Space Efficiently
Vertical sash movement avoids the wide opening arc associated with conventional side-hung casement windows.
Supports Modern Locking Systems
Contemporary vertical sliding windows can incorporate secure locks and hardware selected around the frame and sash configuration.
Maintains Traditional Character
Sash proportions, Georgian bars, heritage-style hardware and suitable frame finishes can complement Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian properties.
Offers Flexible Design Options
uPVC or timber frames, glazing choices, colours and decorative detailing allow the window specification to be matched to different property styles.
Improves Weather Resistance
Modern seals and accurately fitted frames can help limit draughts and weather ingress compared with deteriorated older windows.
Provides Durable Everyday Operation
Properly specified balance mechanisms and modern frame systems support smooth sash movement and straightforward routine maintenance.

Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Vertical Sliding Windows?
Vertical sliding windows have one or more sashes that move vertically within the frame, providing ventilation without requiring the window to project significantly inwards or outwards. Traditional sash windows are the most recognisable example, with configurations available using one or two moving sashes. Modern vertical sliding windows can combine this traditional operating style with double or triple glazing, modern locking systems and uPVC or timber frames.
How Long Does Vertical Sliding Window Installation Take?
Vertical sliding window installation typically takes around one to two hours per standard window, whilst several replacements may take one to two days, depending on the size and complexity of the project. Larger windows, bespoke frames, difficult access or remedial work to the existing openings can extend the installation time. Our in-house installers complete the fitting, sealing, sash adjustment and final operational checks before completing each installation.
How Do You Clean Vertical Sliding Windows?
Clean vertical sliding windows using warm water, mild detergent and a soft microfibre cloth on the glass and frames, paying particular attention to the tracks and meeting rails where dirt can collect. Open the sashes according to the window mechanism to reach accessible surfaces and use a soft brush or vacuum attachment to remove debris from tracks, channels and corners. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals and pressure washers that could damage glazing coatings, seals or frame finishes. Check the tracks, locks and sash movement during cleaning and remove any debris that could restrict smooth operation.
How Do You Choose the Right Vertical Sliding Windows for Your Home?
Choose the right vertical sliding windows by considering your property’s architectural style, frame material, glazing performance, ventilation requirements and maintenance preferences. uPVC provides a low-maintenance option, while timber offers natural character that can complement traditional and period properties. Double or triple glazing can be selected according to the window system and required thermal performance, while Georgian bars, sash proportions, colours and hardware can be chosen to complement the property’s existing architectural details.
What Vertical Sliding Window Design Ideas Should You Consider for Your Home?
Consider vertical sliding window design ideas such as Georgian bars for period properties, timber frames for traditional elevations, woodgrain uPVC for lower-maintenance heritage styling and slim sash profiles for cleaner sightlines. You can also incorporate vertical sliders into bay windows or pair them with obscure or satin glazing in privacy-sensitive rooms. Repeating the same sash proportions, glazing bars and frame finishes across the main elevation can create a consistent exterior appearance.
What Guarantee Do You Provide on Vertical Sliding Window Installation?
Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on qualifying vertical sliding window installation and replacement work, offering long-term assurance for our workmanship. Our in-house team completes applicable replacement window installations under FENSA registration (33081), supporting compliance with relevant Building Regulations and professional installation standards.
