Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

No, planning permission is not always required to replace windows or doors in Lewes, but it is necessary if your property is listed, located within a conservation area, or if the replacement will alter the external appearance significantly. For example, homes in conservation areas or those covered by Article 4 Directions often face stricter controls, and listed buildings require formal consent for any changes to original features. Because requirements can vary depending on your property’s status and the type of work planned, Bowalker Windows Limited recommends that you confirm the specific planning rules with Lewes District Council before starting any windows and door specialist Lewes project.

This is especially relevant for properties within the Lewes Conservation Area, where stricter regulations and Article 4 Directions often apply to window and door replacements.

Yes, replacement windows and doors in the Lewes Conservation Area are subject to Article 4 Direction restrictions, which remove standard permitted development rights and mean that planning permission is generally required for any changes visible from public areas. The South Downs National Park Authority typically expects homeowners to retain or replace historic timber windows, and standard uPVC frames are discouraged unless they are heritage-approved designs that meet strict conservation criteria. If your property is listed, you must obtain Listed Building Consent for any window or door replacement, and double glazing may face additional scrutiny. Local advisory groups such as the Friends of Lewes can provide guidance on appropriate styles and materials, and all planning requirements and Article 4 Direction details are set by the Lewes District Council Planning Applications Committee.

Given these regulatory considerations, choosing the right window style for your Lewes home involves balancing historical authenticity with compliance to local planning rules.

Yes, the best window styles for homes in Lewes depend on the property’s age, architectural style, and planning status. Lewes’s distinctive mix of Georgian townhouses, Victorian terraces, and flint cottages – many within conservation areas – means vertical sliding sash windows are ideal for period homes, preserving original proportions and sightlines. Flush casement windows suit cottages and heritage properties seeking a traditional look. For post-war and modern homes, standard casement and stormproof windows offer practical benefits and a clean appearance, and bay or bow windows are often found in Victorian and Edwardian houses to increase light and space. In conservation zones, local requirements frequently specify slimline double-glazing or authentic timber frames, so it’s important to match your window choice to both your property’s character and any planning restrictions. For tailored advice on selecting the right style, Bowalker Windows Limited can guide you through the options as your windows and door specialist in Lewes.

Just as window selection should respect the unique character and regulations of Lewes properties, choosing the right door style also requires careful consideration of architectural heritage and planning guidelines.

Yes, the best door types for homes in Lewes depend on the property’s age, architectural style, and whether it falls within a conservation area or has heritage status. Composite front doors are well suited to heritage facades, offering an authentic appearance with modern performance, while timber panel or cottage doors complement older cottages and period properties by retaining a traditional look. For modern extensions or contemporary homes, aluminium bifold or sliding doors provide wide openings and a clean, modern design. In conservation areas, local planning requirements may specify the use of traditional materials or designs to maintain the character of the property, so it is important to match the door type to both the building’s style and any relevant regulations. As a windows and door specialist Lewes, Bowalker Windows Limited helps you select the right door to suit your home’s character and meet local requirements.

Just as door selection must respect both the architectural style and planning constraints of Lewes homes, choosing the right rooflight also requires careful consideration of these factors.

Yes, suitable rooflight types for homes and extensions in Lewes depend on the property’s style, roof structure, and whether it is in a conservation area. For modern extensions, fixed rooflights, roof lanterns, and walk-on-glass rooflights are often chosen to provide wide, uninterrupted light and a contemporary appearance. In period properties or those within conservation areas, slim-profile or heritage-style rooflights are preferred because they retain an authentic look and meet planning requirements that restrict visible changes to the roofline. Planning rules in Lewes may limit the use of certain rooflight designs in protected zones, so it is important to match the rooflight type to both the property and local regulations when working with a windows and door specialist Lewes provider.

Just as rooflight selection must account for local regulations and property style, the timing and choice of roofline product replacements are also influenced by both the home’s condition and any conservation requirements.

Roofline products on a Lewes home should be replaced when you notice damage such as rot, leaks, visible cracks, or recurring maintenance issues. Regular inspection helps identify early signs of deterioration, including water staining, sagging, or persistent damp patches. If your home is in a conservation area or is listed, material and design choices may be restricted.

When considering upgrades or replacements for your home’s exterior, it’s important to know what kind of protection and guarantees are available for the products and services you choose.

Yes, every windows and door specialist Lewes installation by Bowalker Windows Limited is covered by a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee that applies to both the workmanship of the installation and the ongoing performance of the products fitted. This guarantee means that if any issue arises from the way your windows or doors were installed, or if the products themselves fail to perform as specified within that period, you are protected and can rely on direct support from us. For Lewes homeowners, this coverage provides long-term security for your property and confidence that your investment in new windows or doors is protected by a recognised, insurance-backed commitment from Bowalker Windows Limited.

We recommend regular maintenance for replacement windows in Lewes to preserve both energy efficiency and the appearance of your home. Clean frames and glass with a mild detergent and soft cloth to prevent buildup and keep finishes looking new. Lubricate moving parts such as hinges and locks every 6 to 12 months with a silicone-based lubricant to avoid stiffness and wear. Inspect and replace damaged seals and weatherstripping to reduce drafts and moisture ingress. Keep drainage holes and trickle vents clear for proper water runoff and ventilation. If your property is in a conservation area or is listed, always check local planning guidelines before altering exterior framework.

Yes, we recommend that maintaining new doors in Lewes involves a routine of cleaning with non-abrasive products, lubricating hinges and locks, and inspecting seals for drafts or moisture. Using gentle cleaners preserves the finish, while periodic lubrication of moving parts prevents sticking and wear. For properties in conservation areas or with listed status, Bowalker Windows Limited advises checking that any maintenance materials or finishes comply with local requirements, so your doors retain both their appearance and compliance. Following these steps helps your new doors from a windows and door specialist Lewes remain functional and attractive over time.

Just as doors benefit from careful upkeep and adherence to local guidelines, rooflights in Lewes require a similar approach to ensure longevity and regulatory compliance.

To maintain rooflights in Lewes, clean the glass and frames regularly with non-abrasive products, inspect seals for leaks or condensation, and keep drainage channels clear. These steps help prevent scratches, preserve appearance, and identify issues before they affect your property. For homes in conservation areas or with listed status, Bowalker Windows Limited advises that specific rooflight types or installation methods may be required to comply with local planning rules. Regular attention to these areas keeps rooflights performing well and supports compliance with Lewes requirements.

When it comes time to replace your rooflight, understanding these maintenance and compliance factors will help ensure a smooth and lawful installation process.

Yes, you can usually replace an existing rooflight without changing the roof opening, provided the new rooflight matches the size and fitting of the previous unit. For windows and door specialist Lewes projects, the process depends on the new rooflight’s dimensions aligning with the current opening, the structural integrity of the surrounding roof, and compliance with building regulations or planning requirements, especially in conservation areas or listed properties. If the new rooflight is a different style or size, or if local authority rules require specific upgrades, changes to the opening may be necessary. Bowalker Windows Limited recommends a site-specific assessment by a qualified windows and door specialist to confirm the best approach for your rooflight replacement in Lewes.

To ensure a smooth assessment and installation process, it’s important to prepare your home before the specialist’s visit.

  • Clear access to all windows and doors being assessed or replaced
  • Move furniture and personal items away from work areas
  • Secure pets in a separate room during the visit
  • Gather any previous correspondence or paperwork about your windows or doors
  • Prepare questions about product options such as uPVC windows or security features
  • List any specific concerns about energy efficiency, draughts, or property style
