Simon and Brandon fitted our three windows in our garage > studio conversion and were great through the day. Arrived when they said they would, were very polite, respectful and pleasant people. Found answers to questions we didn’t realise about the installation and though we haven’t yet finished the project the windows are a very exciting and big step forward for us. Would recommend this company and this team without hesitation. Thank you!

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Replacing windows or doors in Burgess Hill usually does not require planning permission when the work maintains a similar external appearance and falls within permitted development rights. Permission may be required for listed buildings, flats, substantial design changes or properties with specific planning restrictions.

Homeowners around Silverdale Road, St John’s Park and Fairfield Road should check whether their property falls within a conservation area before choosing replacement materials or designs. Mid Sussex District Council is the local planning authority and offers written planning advice for £41 or a virtual meeting with a written response for £82.50.

Burgess Hill has three conservation areas: Silverdale Road/Birchwood Grove Road (designated in 1982), St John’s (1989) and Fairfield (1989). These areas protect Victorian and Edwardian buildings, historic artisan housing and traditional architectural features, including decorative brickwork, tile hanging and roof details.

Replacement windows and doors should preserve the character of affected properties, particularly around Silverdale Road, Park Road and Fairfield Road. Article 4 directions may remove permitted development rights from individual properties or areas, although a blanket direction covering all Burgess Hill homes has not been established. Homeowners should confirm property-specific restrictions with Mid Sussex District Council.

Traditional sash, casement and bay-style windows suit many of Burgess Hill’s Victorian and Edwardian properties, particularly around Silverdale Road, Ferndale Road, Glendale Road and St John’s Park. Timber or appropriately detailed heritage-style frames help preserve the proportions and architectural character of older homes.

For the mid-Victorian artisan houses around Fairfield Road and Livingstone Road, replacement windows should reflect the building’s original opening pattern and glazing arrangement. Contemporary properties outside protected areas may suit energy-efficient uPVC casement, aluminium or flush casement windows, depending on their architectural style.

Traditional panelled timber doors and heritage-style entrance doors suit many Victorian and Edwardian houses around Silverdale Road, Park Road and Crescent Road. Designs featuring appropriate glazing, panel proportions and traditional ironmongery complement the brickwork and decorative features of these properties.

Older terraced homes around Fairfield Road and Livingstone Road may benefit from entrance doors that maintain their original proportions and period appearance. Modern Burgess Hill properties may suit composite, uPVC, aluminium or glazed entrance doors, with contemporary sliding or bifold doors suitable for appropriately designed rear extensions.

Pitched-roof windows suit many Burgess Hill loft conversions, particularly on homes with traditional tiled roofs. Low-profile conservation-style rooflights may be suitable for historic properties around Silverdale Road, St John’s Park and Fairfield Road, where roof appearance and original architectural details require careful consideration.

Flat-roof rooflights and roof lanterns suit appropriately designed modern extensions elsewhere in Burgess Hill. For qualifying houses, rooflights installed under permitted development rights must not project more than 150 mm beyond the existing roof slope or exceed the roof’s highest point. Property-specific planning restrictions and structural requirements must still be checked.

Burgess Hill homeowners should consider replacing fascias, soffits and guttering when they develop rotting timber, persistent leaks, sagging sections, loose fixings or damaged joints. Older Victorian and Edwardian properties around Silverdale Road and St John’s Park may require particular attention where original timber roofline components show moisture damage or deterioration.

For homes within Burgess Hill’s conservation areas, replacement roofline products should respect existing decorative roof details, fascia profiles and traditional materials. Properties near mature trees may benefit from regular gutter inspections to prevent leaf accumulation, overflowing rainwater and damage to roof edges.

Bowalker offers Silver, Gold and Platinum guarantee packages for qualifying window and door installations in Burgess Hill. Its standard Silver Guarantee provides 10 years of frame cover, 5 years for glazed sealed units and 1 year for hardware and fitting. The upgraded Gold package extends glazing cover to 10 years and hardware and fitting cover to 2 years.

The Platinum package provides 15 years of frame cover, 10 years for glazing and fitting, and 3 years for specified hardware. Bowalker is FENSA registered under number 33081 and offers insurance-backed protection for qualifying installations. Homeowners should confirm their selected package and applicable terms in writing before installation.

Burgess Hill homeowners should regularly clean window frames and glazing, clear drainage channels and inspect hinges, locks and weather seals. Properties around Silverdale Road and Birchwood Grove Road, where mature trees contribute to the area’s character, may require closer attention to debris accumulating around external window openings.

For timber windows on Victorian and Edwardian properties near St John’s Park, Park Road and Crescent Road, inspect painted surfaces, glazing joints and exposed timber for signs of moisture damage. Use frame-compatible cleaning products and preserve traditional glazing patterns and decorative details where these contribute to the property’s historic appearance.

New doors in Burgess Hill should be cleaned regularly, with particular attention to thresholds, locking mechanisms, hinges and weather seals. Properties around Fairfield Road and Livingstone Road may have older entrance arrangements where moisture and debris collect around doorsteps and thresholds.

For timber entrance doors on Victorian and Edwardian homes around Silverdale Road and St John’s Park, inspect paintwork, glazing joints and exposed wood for deterioration. Composite, aluminium and uPVC doors should be cleaned using manufacturer-approved products, with locks and hinges maintained according to their specifications.

Burgess Hill homeowners should clean rooflight glazing, inspect interior frames for condensation and check accessible seals for signs of water ingress. Homes near mature trees around Silverdale Road, Birchwood Grove Road and St John’s Park may require more frequent checks for leaves, moss and other debris around rooflight flashing.

For older tiled roofs within Burgess Hill’s conservation areas, professional inspections should check the condition of the surrounding tiles and flashing without damaging original roofing details. Rooflights on modern extensions should be checked after heavy rainfall for blocked drainage, deteriorating seals or visible leaks.

An existing rooflight in a Burgess Hill home may be replaced without changing the roof opening when the new unit fits the existing dimensions and remains compatible with the roof pitch, flashing and supporting structure. A professional survey should confirm the size, condition and suitability of the existing opening before replacement.

For Victorian and Edwardian properties around Silverdale Road, St John’s Park and Fairfield Road, retaining the existing opening may help preserve the roof’s original appearance and limit structural alterations. Planning permission or listed building consent may still be required depending on the property’s designation and the proposed rooflight design.

Before Bowalker’s installation team arrives at your Burgess Hill property, clear the work areas and arrange suitable access for materials and equipment. Homes around Fairfield Road, Livingstone Road and older residential streets near St John’s Park may require advance parking arrangements where on-street parking or limited driveway space affects access.

  • Clear Work Areas: Move furniture, rugs and fragile belongings away from windows, doors and accessible rooflight work areas.
  • Remove Window Coverings: Take down curtains, blinds and decorative fittings that may obstruct the installation.
  • Arrange Parking and Access: Confirm suitable parking and unloading space, particularly around Fairfield Road, Livingstone Road and older terraced streets.
  • Provide Power Access: Ensure suitable electrical sockets are accessible for installation equipment.
  • Check Property Restrictions: Inform Bowalker’s team about listed building status, conservation area restrictions or relevant planning permissions.
  • Secure Pets and Children: Keep pets and children away from installation areas throughout the work.
