Stained Glass Heritage Windows
Period-appropriate profiles combined with decorative coloured glass allow heritage windows to complement traditional architectural details in listed buildings, conservation areas and period homes where stained glass contributes to the property's existing character. Glass colours, patterns and lead layouts can be selected to complement existing decorative glazing, with the window specification considered alongside relevant heritage or planning requirements where applicable. Bowalker installs and replaces stained glass heritage windows with carefully matched designs, sympathetic uPVC or timber frames and energy-efficient sealed units, helping maintain traditional appearance whilst improving everyday window performance.
Learn More →Commonly associated with Victorian and Edwardian properties, bay windows can gain considerable decorative impact from stained glass, particularly where coloured panels are aligned consistently across the central and angled sections. Decorative glazing can be incorporated into selected upper lights where appropriate, retaining clearer outward views through other sections whilst introducing colour and architectural detail. For each installation, we install stained glass bay windows with carefully aligned decorative panels, secure uPVC or timber frames and energy-efficient sealed units across the bay.
Learn More →Where a curved head adds architectural interest to an entrance area, period property or feature elevation, stained glass arched windows combine the distinctive arched profile with coloured or decorative glazing designed to complement the shape and proportions of the opening. Fanlight-inspired, geometric and other decorative layouts can be considered depending on the window design and surrounding architecture. Our in-house installers install and replace stained glass arched windows with precisely shaped frames, carefully positioned decorative glazing and secure sealed units.
Learn More →Suited to cottages, rural homes and period properties, stained glass cottage windows combine traditional proportions with coloured decorative glazing that adds distinctive character without disrupting the building's existing aesthetic. Colours and patterns can be selected to complement existing architectural details, surrounding joinery and other decorative glazing rather than introducing a visually disconnected feature. With engineered timber or woodgrain uPVC frame options available, we install and replace stained glass cottage windows with carefully selected designs, energy-efficient sealed units and secure fittings.
Learn More →Closely matched colour palettes, lead layouts and sympathetic frame profiles make stained glass historic windows suitable for period renovations where replicating or complementing existing decorative glazing is important. Existing stained glass panels, photographs or architectural drawings can help inform replacement designs, subject to the significance of the original glass and relevant heritage or planning requirements. Where historically significant glass survives, specialist conservation advice may be appropriate before replacement is considered. Bowalker installs and replaces stained glass historic windows with carefully matched colours, patterns and sympathetic frames, improving performance whilst respecting traditional appearance.
Learn More →Large fixed glazed areas make stained glass picture windows suitable for entrance halls, stairwells and prominent elevations where coloured patterns, decorative motifs or feature designs are intended to create a strong architectural focal point. With no opening sash or operating hardware interrupting the glazed area, fixed picture windows can accommodate larger decorative compositions where the glass, frame and overall specification allow. We install and replace stained glass picture windows with secure uPVC or timber frames, energy-efficient sealed units and carefully positioned decorative glazing.
Learn More →Slim grid-style frames and decorative coloured glazing give stained glass Crittall-style windows a distinctive combination of industrial character and ornamental detail, making them well suited to feature elevations, extensions and period-inspired renovations. Thermally broken aluminium profiles can recreate narrow steel-look sightlines and geometric glazing divisions whilst supporting improved thermal performance compared with traditional uninsulated metal frames. We install and replace stained glass Crittall-style windows with carefully positioned decorative glazing, energy-efficient sealed units and durable powder-coated finishes, creating a balanced combination of colour, defined grid detailing and modern window performance.
Learn More →Stained Glass uPVC Windows
Stained Glass uPVC Windows
Low-maintenance construction, strong thermal performance and a wide choice of finishes make uPVC a practical frame material for stained glass windows across traditional and contemporary properties. Multi-chambered profiles can be combined with energy-efficient sealed units, decorative glazing and secure multipoint locking to provide dependable everyday performance. We install and replace stained glass uPVC windows with carefully positioned decorative panels and a choice of colours and woodgrain foil finishes, allowing the frame specification to complement the property's architectural style.
Learn More →Stained Glass Aluminium Windows
Stained Glass Aluminium Windows
Combining slim sightlines with thermally broken profiles that help reduce heat transfer through the frame, aluminium is a practical choice for stained glass windows where decorative glazing and clean architectural lines are both priorities. Narrow frame sections keep coloured and patterned glazing visually prominent, making aluminium particularly well suited to contemporary extensions and feature elevations where the stained glass composition forms an architectural focal point. Bowalker installs and replaces stained glass aluminium windows with energy-efficient sealed units, secure multipoint locking and durable powder-coated finishes, with a choice of RAL colours available depending on the selected window system.
Learn More →Natural character and traditional detailing make timber particularly well suited to stained glass windows in cottages, Victorian and Edwardian homes and other period properties where decorative glazing contributes to the building's character. Engineered timber can improve dimensional stability compared with traditional solid timber whilst retaining the appearance and detailing associated with traditional joinery. We install and replace stained glass timber windows with energy-efficient sealed units, durable microporous paint or stain finishes, robust hardware and carefully positioned decorative glazing.
Learn More →Stained Glass Fixed Windows
Stained Glass Fixed Windows
Where decorative compositions are intended to form a prominent visual feature, fixed stained glass windows provide an uninterrupted glazed surface suited to stairwells, entrance halls and feature elevations. With no opening sash or operating hardware interrupting the glazing, fixed units can accommodate larger decorative designs where the glazing and frame specification allow. We install and replace stained glass fixed windows with secure uPVC or timber frames, energy-efficient sealed units and carefully positioned decorative glazing for dependable long-term performance.
Learn More →Combining practical side-hung or top-hung opening sections with decorative coloured glazing, stained glass casement windows suit period homes, cottages and traditionally styled properties where ventilation and distinctive glazing character are both priorities. Decorative panels can be positioned within selected sections of the window to balance coloured detailing with natural light and outward views. Our in-house installers install and replace stained glass casement windows with secure multipoint locking, durable weather seals, energy-efficient sealed units and carefully positioned decorative glass.
Learn More →Offering two opening functions within a single frame, stained glass tilt and turn windows tilt inwards at the top for controlled ventilation or open fully inwards for greater airflow and easier internal cleaning. Decorative glazing can be configured around the proportions and opening sections of the sash to maintain a balanced appearance when the window is closed. We install and replace stained glass tilt and turn windows with secure multipoint locking hardware, energy-efficient sealed units and carefully positioned decorative designs, combining flexible everyday operation with distinctive coloured glazing.
Learn More →Traditional vertical sliding operation combined with decorative coloured glazing makes stained glass vertical sliding windows particularly suitable for Victorian, Edwardian and other period-style properties where glazing detail contributes to architectural character. Decorative panels can be incorporated into the upper sash or other selected sections to complement the proportions and design of the window. Bowalker installs and replaces stained glass vertical sliding windows with reliable balance systems, secure locking hardware and carefully aligned decorative panels within energy-efficient sealed units.
Learn More →Where wider openings and decorative coloured glazing are both required, stained glass bifold windows use multiple folding panels to create a broad opening whilst retaining decorative detail when closed. Coloured or patterned glazing can be coordinated across individual panels to create a consistent composition, subject to the panel dimensions, glazing specification and operating system. Our in-house installers install and replace stained glass bifold windows with precision-engineered timber frames, secure locking hardware, energy-efficient sealed units and carefully positioned decorative glazing.

Arrived when they said they would, were very polite, respectful and pleasant people. Found answers to questions we didn’t realise about the installation and though we haven’t yet finished the project the windows are a very exciting and big step forward for us. Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Stained Glass Windows?
Stained glass windows are decorative glazing features that use coloured, textured, painted or patterned glass to create distinctive designs and alter the way natural light enters a space. Traditional stained glass is commonly constructed from individual pieces of glass joined with lead cames, while contemporary decorative glazing can use different techniques and may be incorporated into modern window systems. Stained glass is particularly associated with churches and historic architecture but is also widely used as a decorative feature in residential entranceways, bay windows, feature windows and period properties.
How Long Does Stained Glass Window Installation Take?
Stained glass window installation usually takes between 1 day and 2 weeks, depending on the number and size of windows, frame replacement requirements, decorative glazing complexity, property access and the selected window specification. The on-site installation of straightforward replacement windows may be relatively quick, while bespoke decorative glazing can require additional design and manufacturing time before installation takes place. Bowalker’s in-house team confirms the expected installation schedule once the window design, measurements and glazing specification have been finalised.
How Do You Clean Stained Glass Windows?
Clean stained glass windows using lukewarm water, mild detergent and a soft microfibre cloth, working gently across each glass section without applying pressure to decorative joints or painted details. Use a soft-bristled brush or cotton bud around lead lines, corners and textured areas where dust can collect. Avoid abrasive pads, pressure washers, ammonia-based cleaners and harsh chemicals that could damage coloured surfaces, leadwork or seals. Genuine historic, painted or deteriorating stained glass should be assessed before cleaning, as specialist conservation methods may be required to avoid damaging significant original material.
How Do You Choose the Right Stained Glass Windows for Your Home?
Choose the right stained glass windows by considering your property’s architectural style, existing decorative features, preferred colours, required privacy and window location. Traditional geometric or floral designs can complement Victorian, Edwardian and cottage properties, whilst simpler patterns can suit contemporary homes. During your consultation, we assess the property and recommend a stained glass design that balances architectural character, natural light, privacy and practical window performance.
What Stained Glass Window Design Ideas Should You Consider for Your Home?
Consider stained glass window design ideas such as floral motifs for Victorian properties, geometric patterns for Arts and Crafts homes, coloured border designs for traditional windows and simpler abstract panels for contemporary interiors. Stained glass can also be incorporated into arched windows, entrance features, bay windows or fixed picture windows to create a focal point. Coordinating colours and patterns with existing architectural details can create a consistent design throughout the property.
What Guarantee Do You Provide on Stained Glass Window Installation?
Bowalker provides a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on qualifying stained glass window installation and replacement work. Our FENSA registration (Reg. 33081) applies to qualifying replacement external window installations completed under the scheme, with the relevant FENSA certificate providing evidence that the installation has been registered with the local authority and complies with applicable Building Regulations. Other stained glass work may fall outside FENSA’s scope depending on the type of installation.
