Double Glazed Crittall-Style Windows

Double Glazed Crittall-Style Windows

Improved thermal comfort and distinctive grid-style glazing work together in double glazed Crittall-style windows. Bowalker Windows installs and replaces these windows using Low-E glass, argon-filled insulated glazing units, warm-edge spacer bars and precisely sealed frames that reduce heat loss and help minimise condensation. The slim steel-look profile remains uncompromised, providing improved acoustic comfort alongside the refined industrial appearance that suits both contemporary and period-inspired homes.

Triple Glazed Crittall-Style Windows

Triple Glazed Crittall-Style Windows

Three panes of Low-E glass separated by two argon-filled insulating cavities and warm-edge spacer bars significantly reduce heat transfer and external noise whilst maintaining the slim proportions expected from Crittall-style glazing. Exposed properties, homes near busy roads and extensions with large glazed elevations benefit most from this specification. Our Crittall-style window installers install and replace triple glazed Crittall-style windows with carefully proportioned glazing bars, high-performance weather seals and precision alignment, creating warmer, quieter interiors that retain their distinctive steel-look appearance.

Obscure Glass Crittall-Style Windows
Obscure Glass Crittall-Style Windows

Bathrooms, entrance halls and ground-floor rooms benefit from obscure glass Crittall-style windows where privacy is important without sacrificing brightness. Patterned glazing limits direct visibility whilst allowing natural daylight to pass freely through the slim industrial-style frame. We install and replace these windows with glazing options including satin, stippled and textured patterns across a range of opacity levels, preserving the clean grid-style appearance whilst delivering secure, thermally efficient glazing suited to everyday residential use.

Satin Glass Crittall-Style Windows
Satin Glass Crittall-Style Windows

Daylight diffuses evenly through a smooth acid-etched frosted surface whilst direct visibility remains limited. Bathrooms, home offices, hallways and internal glazed screens all benefit from this combination of privacy and understated architectural detailing. Our in-house installers install and replace satin glass Crittall-style windows with precise frame alignment, carefully proportioned glazing bars and high-performance glazing, creating a refined finish that complements both industrial-inspired and contemporary interiors.

Leaded Glass Crittall-Style Windows
Leaded Glass Crittall-Style Windows

Where existing architectural features call for traditional detailing, leaded glass Crittall-style windows bridge industrial-inspired framing with heritage aesthetics through decorative lead patterns set within a slim steel-look frame. This glazing style suits period renovations and older properties where character is as important as performance. Bowalker Windows installs and replaces these windows using diamond, square or bespoke lead patterns, period-appropriate came widths and insulated glazing units, preserving character whilst improving thermal efficiency, weather resistance and long-term security.

Stained Glass Crittall-Style Windows
Stained Glass Crittall-Style Windows

Coloured or decorative glazing within a slim grid-style frame transforms stained glass Crittall-style windows into striking architectural features rather than simple decorative elements. Entrance halls, stairwells and feature elevations particularly benefit from this approach. We install and replace these windows with close attention to colour, glazing proportions and surrounding detailing and can incorporate or encapsulate existing stained glass panels within insulated glazing units where appropriate, helping preserve original character whilst improving thermal performance and security.

Mirror Glass Crittall-Style Windows
Mirror Glass Crittall-Style Windows

Limiting outside visibility without permanently obscuring the glazing sets mirror glass Crittall-style windows apart from other privacy options. A reflective external coating preserves clear outward views when outdoor light levels exceed indoor lighting, making this option well suited to street-facing rooms, ground-floor spaces and modern extensions. Our in-house installers install and replace these windows using slim steel-look frames and carefully specified glazing that also helps reduce glare and solar heat gain whilst maintaining a consistent external appearance.

Secondary Glazing Crittall-Style Windows
Secondary Glazing Crittall-Style Windows

Retaining original steel windows whilst improving their thermal and acoustic performance is exactly what secondary glazing for Crittall-style windows is designed to achieve. A discreet internal glazed panel significantly reduces draughts, heat loss and outside noise without altering the external appearance of the property. We install secondary glazing in fixed, sliding or hinged configurations with careful attention to existing sightlines and glazing bar alignment, making this an ideal solution for listed buildings, conservation areas and period renovations.

Fixed Crittall-Style Windows

Fixed Crittall-Style Windows

Light and architectural clarity take priority over ventilation with fixed Crittall-style windows, making them a strong choice for living rooms, stairwells, extensions and internal glazed screens. Slim steel-look frames and precisely aligned glazing bars maximise the glass area whilst maintaining the structured appearance associated with traditional steel windows. Bowalker Windows surveys and installs every fixed unit with precision, delivering secure sealed glazing, excellent thermal performance and uninterrupted views without visible hinges or handles.

Casement Crittall-Style Windows
Casement Crittall-Style Windows

Opening sashes that ventilate without disrupting the grid-style appearance define casement Crittall-style windows, with side-hung or top-hung configurations available to suit kitchens, bedrooms and living spaces alike. The slim steel-look frame remains consistent whether the window is open or closed. We install and replace casement Crittall-style windows with secure multipoint locking systems, Low-E glazing and precisely aligned glazing bars, ensuring dependable operation and consistent architectural detailing across every opening.

Tilt and Turn Crittall-Style Windows
Tilt and Turn Crittall-Style Windows

Available for selected Crittall-style window systems, tilt and turn designs combine two opening functions within a single slim frame. The sash tilts inwards from the top for secure everyday ventilation or opens fully to improve airflow and simplify cleaning from inside the property, making this option particularly suitable for upper-floor rooms. Our installers install and replace tilt and turn Crittall-style windows with high-performance glazing, precision-engineered hardware and secure locking systems, combining flexible operation with the clean industrial aesthetic associated with steel-look glazing.

Bifold Crittall-Style Windows
Bifold Crittall-Style Windows

Where wider glazed openings are required, specialist bifold Crittall-style window systems use multiple glazed panels that fold and stack neatly whilst maintaining a strong steel-look appearance when closed. Extensions, garden rooms and open-plan kitchens benefit from the increased natural light, ventilation and stronger connection with outdoor spaces. Our in-house installers install and replace bespoke bifold Crittall-style windows using precision-engineered tracking systems, secure multipoint locking hardware and carefully matched glazing bars, ensuring smooth operation, lasting performance and consistent architectural detailing throughout.

What Are the Benefits of Installing Crittall-Style Windows?

Installing Crittall-style windows increases natural light, creates a distinctive architectural feature, improves thermal performance, strengthens security, reduces maintenance and supports flexible design. Modern aluminium systems use slim thermally broken frames, energy-efficient glazing and secure multipoint locking systems, allowing homeowners to achieve the appearance of traditional steel-framed windows with improved comfort and dependable everyday performance.

crittall style windows

Maximises Natural Light

Slim aluminium profiles reduce the amount of visible frame surrounding each glazed section. This allows more daylight to enter kitchens, living rooms and extensions whilst preserving the recognisable grid-style design.

Creates a Distinctive Architectural Feature

Defined glazing bars and narrow sightlines create a structured industrial appearance. The design complements contemporary extensions, converted buildings and period properties with suitable architectural details.

Improves Thermal Efficiency

Thermally broken aluminium frames reduce heat transfer through the profile. Double or triple glazing, low-emissivity glass and sealed units also help limit heat loss and maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.

Provides Strong and Durable Frames

Aluminium offers high structural strength without requiring bulky profiles. Its rigidity supports larger glazed areas whilst powder-coated finishes protect the frame against corrosion, fading and weather exposure.

Enhances Security

Modern Crittall-style windows can incorporate multipoint locks, internally beaded glazing and laminated or toughened glass. These features strengthen accessible openings whilst remaining discreet within the slim frame design.

Requires Minimal Maintenance

Powder-coated aluminium frames do not require regular painting or staining. Routine cleaning and periodic checks of seals, hinges and locks usually provide the maintenance needed for dependable operation.

Supports Flexible Interior and Exterior Design

Crittall-style windows can be used across external elevations, extensions and selected internal glazed divisions. Fixed, casement, tilt and turn and bifold configurations allow the same visual style to be repeated across different areas of the property.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Crittall-style windows are steel-look windows characterised by slim frames and glazing bars arranged in a distinctive grid pattern. Modern versions are commonly made from thermally broken aluminium, allowing them to recreate the industrial appearance of traditional steel windows whilst providing improved insulation, weather resistance and security. They are often installed in extensions, period renovations, open-plan living spaces and design-led homes.

Crittall-style window installation costs range between £600 and £2,500+ per square metre, depending on the dimensions, opening configuration, glazing specification, frame finish and number of glazing bars required. Large bespoke units, bifold configurations and structural alterations generally increase the price because they require more detailed measurement and installation work. Access restrictions and laminated, acoustic or triple glazing may also affect the final cost. Following a property survey, Bowalker provides a fixed-price quotation based on the requirements of the installation.

Crittall-style window installation takes 1 to 2 hours per window, depending on size and complexity, with a standard property installation completed within 1 to 3 days. Whole-property installations commonly take several days depending on the number of windows, frame sizes, access and any structural preparation required. Our in-house team surveys each opening before work begins and plans the installation to achieve accurate alignment across the frames and glazing bars.

Clean Crittall-style windows with warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth, then use a non-abrasive glass cleaner on each glazed section. Pay attention to the corners around glazing bars where dust may collect. Hinges, drainage channels and locks should also be kept clear of debris. Avoid abrasive pads, solvent-based products and harsh chemicals because they may damage the powder-coated frame finish, seals or specialist glass coatings.

The right Crittall-style windows depend on the property’s architecture, opening size, preferred grid pattern and ventilation requirements. Consider the frame colour, glazing bar proportions, glass specification and whether fixed or opening sections are required. Black frames create a traditional industrial appearance, whilst softer neutral finishes may suit period homes. During your consultation, we assess the property and recommend a design that balances appearance, insulation, security and practical operation.

Floor-to-ceiling glazed elevations that maximise light, symmetrical steel-style grids that add industrial character, wider central panes that frame outdoor views and internal glazed divisions that carry the Crittall aesthetic through the interior are among the most effective design ideas for this window style. Room scale should guide the choice between symmetrical grids, larger central panes or narrow vertical sections. Matching frame finishes across windows, bifold doors and internal glazing strengthens the overall scheme, whilst fixed panels combined with opening casements maintain ventilation without disrupting the design.
