Types of Pyramid Rooflights We Install and Replace

Aluminium Pyramid Rooflights

Aluminium Pyramid Rooflights

Slim structural profiles, durability and compatibility with thermally broken frame designs make aluminium a practical material for pyramid rooflights where larger glazed areas and clean sightlines are priorities. The aluminium framework supports the sloping glass panels as they rise towards the apex while providing secure connections around the perimeter of the rooflight. Bowalker installs and replaces aluminium pyramid rooflights with suitable glazing, carefully fitted glazing bars, compatible upstands, and weather-resistant seals, as specified for the roof opening and project requirements.

Steel Pyramid Rooflights

Steel Pyramid Rooflights

High structural strength makes steel suitable for pyramid rooflight systems where the frame must support multiple inclined glass panels across the roof opening. Carefully designed steel profiles can form the perimeter, glazing bars and apex connections required to maintain the pyramid geometry while providing a defined framed appearance. Our in-house pyramid rooflight installation team installs and replaces steel pyramid rooflights with appropriate safety glazing, weather-resistant seals, and supporting components, selected to suit the dimensions and structural requirements of each installation.

Double Glazed Pyramid Rooflights

Double Glazed Pyramid Rooflights

Two panes of safety glass separated by a sealed insulating cavity make double-glazed pyramid rooflights a dependable option for residential extensions where balanced natural light and reliable thermal efficiency are required. The hermetically sealed gap helps inhibit thermal transfer through the overhead glazing while maintaining crisp, clear views of the sky above. Bowalker installs and replaces double-glazed pyramid rooflights featuring toughened safety panes, thermally broken framing bars, and expertly fitted perimeter weather seals, precisely specified to your roof aperture.

Triple Glazed Pyramid Rooflights

Triple Glazed Pyramid Rooflights

Three panes of glass separated by dual insulating cavities give triple-glazed pyramid rooflights superior thermal insulation performance, making them ideal for homeowners aiming to maximise energy efficiency and minimise heat loss through expansive roof openings. The heavier multi-pane configuration requires reinforced structural support framing and robust hip joints to maintain secure long-term alignment and weather compression. We install and replace triple-glazed pyramid rooflights with compatible heavy-duty frames, precision-sealed glazing units, and high-performance perimeter seals.

Toughened Glass Pyramid Rooflights

Toughened Glass Pyramid Rooflights

Thermal safety treatment provides toughened glass pyramid rooflights with significantly greater impact resistance than standard annealed glass, making this glazing option essential for elevated overhead installations exposed to extreme weather and falling debris. If subjected to extreme impact, toughened safety glass is engineered to crumble into small, harmless granules rather than dangerous jagged shards. Bowalker installs and replaces toughened glass pyramid rooflights with secure structural retention profiles, specialised weather flashings, and safety-certified panes matched to your project requirements.

Laminated Glass Pyramid Rooflights

Laminated Glass Pyramid Rooflights

Bonded internal polymer interlayers give laminated glass pyramid rooflights exceptional safety performance by holding glass fragments firmly in place if the glass cracks, while also providing enhanced acoustic damping against external noise and filtering harmful UV rays. This specialised overhead glazing offers high-security protection and dependable structural integrity for modern residential living spaces. We install and replace laminated glass pyramid rooflights with compatible weather-resistant framing systems, secure structural bonding, and precise perimeter seals.

Fixed Pyramid Rooflights

Fixed Pyramid Rooflights

Non-opening four-sided architectural configurations make fixed pyramid rooflights the perfect choice for spaces where the primary objective is maximising vertical height, stunning interior aesthetics, and abundant overhead daylight without requiring active ventilation. Their steep, self-draining sloping glass panels naturally shed rainwater and prevent moisture pooling above kitchens, stairwells, and living areas. Our in-house team installs and replaces fixed pyramid rooflights using robust structural frames, weather-tight flashing details, and tamper-proof security fixings.

Opening Pyramid Rooflights

Opening Pyramid Rooflights

Engineered to combine striking symmetrical aesthetics with practical everyday ventilation, the opening pyramid rooflights feature discreet electric actuators or manual operating systems that smoothly elevate the central structure above its base. These operable ventilation units can also be integrated with smart climate controls and automated rain sensors for effortless indoor airflow management. Bowalker installs and replaces opening pyramid rooflights complete with weather-sealed hinge mechanisms, reliable lifting motors, and secure perimeter locking systems tailored to your living space.

What Are the Benefits of Installing Pyramid Rooflight?

Pyramid rooflights combine striking four-sided symmetrical architecture, multi-directional daylight penetration, and advanced thermal performance options suitable for both traditional and contemporary properties. When correctly specified and installed, they create a dramatic overhead focal point while providing robust weather protection, straightforward ventilation, and reliable energy efficiency.

8 key benefits of installing a pyramid rooflight are:

Titan Roof Lanterns

Brings Natural Light Into the Room From Multiple Directions

The four sloping glass panes capture overhead sunlight from all angles throughout the day, flooding dark extensions, kitchens, and living spaces with generous natural light.

Creates More Visible Glass With Slim Glazing Bars

Engineering the structure with slim aluminium or steel glazing bars minimises frame obstruction, maximising the glazed surface area for brighter interiors and broader views of the sky.

Helps Rainwater and Dirt Run Off Through Sloping Glazing

The steep, symmetrical pitch of the pyramid design naturally channels rainwater and debris downward, preventing standing water and minimising routine cleaning requirements.

Improves Thermal Comfort With High-Performance Glazing

Compatible double- or triple-glazed units, thermally broken frames, and insulated upstands help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature during colder UK months.

Helps Limit Summer Heat Gain With Solar-Control Glass

Specialised solar-control glazing can be integrated to reflect excess solar radiation, preventing the spaces beneath from overheating on hot summer days.

Supports Self-Cleaning Glass for Easier Maintenance

Hydrophilic self-cleaning glass coatings loosen organic dirt using daylight and wash it away smoothly during rain showers, keeping overhead panes clear with minimal effort.

Provides Ventilation With Opening Pyramid Rooflight Options

Motorised or manual opening mechanisms allow the central pyramid structure to elevate, releasing warm, stale air and introducing fresh airflow into the room below.

Provides Strong UV Filtering With Suitable Glazing

Tinted, laminated, or coated glazing options filter out damaging ultraviolet rays, protecting your interior furniture, flooring, and soft furnishings from fading over time.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

A pyramid rooflight is a four-sided architectural roof glazing unit designed with sloping glass panes that rise to a central apex over a flat or low-pitch roof. It is constructed by mounting sturdy perimeter upstands onto the roof structure, securing structural framing members (such as thermally broken aluminium or steel hip bars), and tightly sealing double- or triple-glazed safety panes together to create a weather-tight, light-enhancing overhead feature.

Yes, a pyramid rooflight can be installed above a stairwell to flood multi-level staircases and hallways with abundant natural daylight. This striking architectural feature dramatically opens up vertical space while brightening dark transition areas throughout your home.

A standard pyramid rooflight has four sloped glass panels that meet at a central apex, forming a symmetrical triangular profile. Custom or larger multi-bay designs may incorporate additional supporting glass sections and internal hip bars to span broader roof apertures.

A 30-degree or 40-degree pitch is used for a pyramid rooflight to ensure the optimal balance between aesthetic height and internal headroom. This carefully engineered slope also provides a steep enough angle to encourage efficient natural drainage of rainwater and debris.

Yes, a pyramid shape helps rainwater and dirt run off by utilising its steep, sloping triangular faces to naturally channel water downwards and away from the glass surface. This self-draining geometric design prevents standing water and significantly minimises routine cleaning.

Pyramid rooflights do not always need glazing bars, as smaller or structural glass-to-glass bonded designs can be manufactured with minimal framing. However, traditional models use hip bars and rafters to structurally support the meeting glass panels across larger spans.

In a large pyramid rooflight, extra glazing bars or T-bars are required when the glass span exceeds standard manufacturing limits for single panes. These additional structural members help distribute weight evenly, resist high wind loads, and safely support extensive multi-pane configurations.

A standard off-the-shelf pyramid rooflight can measure up to 2000mm x 2000mm (or 2m x 2m), while custom or bespoke designs can span up to 7 meters unsupported. Even larger dimensions can be achieved when built with an additional on-site structural framework.

Yes, pyramid rooflights can be made to measure, allowing our expert in-house team to customise dimensions, frame finishes, and pitch angles. This ensures a seamless fit that matches your specific flat-roof aperture and architectural layout.

Choose double glazing for a pyramid rooflight for a balanced, cost-effective solution that provides dependable thermal insulation in standard living spaces. Alternatively, choose triple glazing when maximum energy efficiency, reduced heat loss, and superior acoustic dampening are your top priorities.

Yes, pyramid rooflights can cause condensation to build up around the apex and glazing bars as warm, moisture-laden indoor air rises and comes into contact with colder metal framing profiles or glass surfaces. This can be effectively managed and minimised by specifying thermally broken frames and maintaining proper room ventilation.

Yes, a pyramid rooflight can cause excessive solar heat in summer because its expansive, multi-directional glass angles capture direct sunlight throughout the day. Fortunately, this can be easily controlled by specifying advanced solar-control glass or adding integrated shading blinds.

Yes, a pyramid rooflight can be opened for ventilation if you choose a specific opening model equipped with motorised electric actuators or manual winders. These mechanisms smoothly elevate the structure to release warm, stale air and invite fresh breezes into the room below.

Yes, blinds can be fitted to a pyramid rooflight using specially engineered tensioned pleated or cellular blinds designed to track the sloping frame angles. These bespoke shading systems help you easily control natural light, interior privacy, and solar heat gain.
