Learn More →Steel Pyramid Rooflights
Steel Pyramid Rooflights
Characterised by a striking multi-angled geometry, steel pyramid rooflights create a dramatic architectural focal point that channels abundant daylight into open-plan spaces. Steel's exceptional load-bearing strength allows robust framing to securely support multiple inclined glass panes rising toward a central apex. Bowalker’s in-house team professionally installs and replaces these structures, combining durable steel frames with precise hip rafters, weather-resistant flashings, and safety-rated glazing tailored to your property's exact dimensions.
Learn More →Steel Roof Lanterns
Steel Roof Lanterns
Combining traditional elegance with modern industrial strength, steel roof lanterns feature elevated, multi-pane pitched designs that dramatically increase vertical height and light volume in large rooms. Steel framing's rigidity enables wider spans and more sophisticated sightlines without compromising safety or thermal performance. We provide complete installation and replacement services, ensuring every component, from perimeter curbs to ridge details and structural glazing bars, is precision-installed for long-lasting durability.
Learn More →Steel Barrel Vault Rooflights
Steel Barrel Vault Rooflights
With a graceful curved or arched profile, steel barrel vault rooflights span extensive roof openings to deliver continuous, dramatic overhead glazing. Their robust steel framework effortlessly maintains the unique structural geometry and supports the arched glass panels across the expanse. Bowalker’s dedicated in-house team installs and replaces these systems with precision-engineered glazing, weather-tight seals, and heavy-duty components tailored to your exact dimensions and design requirements.
Learn More →Double Glazed Steel Rooflights
Double Glazed Steel Rooflights
By pairing two protective panes of safety glass with a sealed insulating cavity, double-glazed steel rooflights provide a dependable solution for domestic extensions that need balanced illumination and reliable thermal insulation. This hermetically sealed gap minimises heat transfer through the overhead structure while offering clear, crisp views overhead. Bowalker installs and replaces these double-glazed systems using toughened safety glass, thermally broken steel framing bars, and precise perimeter weather seals tailored to your aperture.
Learn More →Triple Glazed Steel Rooflights
Triple Glazed Steel Rooflights
Featuring three glass panes with two sealed insulating cavities, triple-glazed steel rooflights provide increased thermal insulation where limiting heat transfer through overhead glazing is a priority. The extra pane creates a heavier glazing unit, so it requires a supporting frame suited to its dimensions and specifications. Bowalker’s in-house team installs and replaces triple-glazed steel rooflights using compatible steel frames, securely sealed glazing units, and weather-resistant perimeter seals selected to meet the requirements of each installation.
Learn More →Toughened Glass Steel Rooflights
Toughened Glass Steel Rooflights
Strengthened through controlled heat treatment, toughened glass offers greater resistance to impact and thermal stress than standard annealed glass. If breakage occurs, fully toughened glass is designed to fragment into smaller pieces rather than large, sharp shards. Bowalker installs and replaces toughened glass steel rooflights where this glazing specification suits the project, using compatible steel framing, secure glass retention and weather-resistant perimeter seals to create a properly fitted overhead glazing system.
Learn More →Laminated Glass Steel Rooflights
Laminated Glass Steel Rooflights
Featuring a durable internal polymer interlayer bonded between glass panels, laminated glass steel rooflights offer advanced safety by holding fragments securely in place if cracked, alongside providing superior acoustic dampening and UV filtration. This high-security overhead glazing delivers maximum structural integrity for modern living environments. We install and replace these advanced configurations with compatible weather-resistant steel frames, secure structural bonding, and meticulous perimeter sealing.
Learn More →Fixed Steel Rooflights
Fixed Steel Rooflights
Designed without an opening mechanism, fixed steel rooflights provide overhead daylight where ventilation is not required. Their stationary construction allows the steel frame, glazing and perimeter seals to form a secure roof glazing system suited to kitchens, extensions, stairwells and living areas. Bowalker’s in-house team installs and replaces fixed steel rooflights using compatible glazing, weather-resistant sealing components, and secure frame fixings selected for the roof opening and individual project specification.
Learn More →Opening Steel Rooflights
Opening Steel Rooflights
Combining overhead glazing with controllable ventilation, opening steel rooflights let fresh air into the property through an operable glazed section. Depending on the selected rooflight system, opening configurations can use compatible manual or powered mechanisms to control ventilation. Bowalker installs and replaces opening steel rooflights with suitable operating components, secure closing mechanisms, weather-resistant seals and steel framing, with each system specified to suit the roof opening and ventilation requirements of the living space.

Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Steel Rooflight and How Is It Constructed?
A steel rooflight is a glazed roof opening supported by a steel frame that lets natural daylight into the space below. It is constructed with a steel perimeter frame, suitable glazing, seals, flashings, and supporting components, with the exact construction determined by the rooflight style and installation requirements.
Can a Steel Rooflight Be Installed Above a Stairwell?
Yes, you can install a steel rooflight above a stairwell to introduce more light into an area that may receive limited light from vertical windows. Assess the roof structure, rooflight position, glazing specification, and access requirements to determine a suitable configuration.
How Many Glass Panels Does a Steel Rooflight Have?
A steel rooflight can have anywhere from a single expansive glass pane for minimal flat designs to multiple panels divided by structural glazing bars for larger configurations or pitched styles. The exact pane count depends on the overall surface area, structural weight limits, and your chosen aesthetic preference.
What Pitch Is Used for a Steel Rooflight?
The pitch for a steel or flat rooflight is at least 3° to 5° (with 5° being the widely recommended industry standard) to ensure proper water drainage and prevent pooling. This slight incline allows rainwater and debris to run off naturally, maintaining clear overhead views.
Do Steel Rooflights Need Glazing Bars?
No, steel rooflights do not always require intermediate glazing bars if the overall structural opening is small enough to be spanned by a single self-supporting glass unit. However, larger installations use slim steel glazing bars or T-bars to support multiple glass panes across wide spans.
When Are Extra Glazing Bars or T-Bars Needed in a Large Steel Rooflight?
Extra glazing bars or steel T-bars are needed in a large steel rooflight when the glazing dimensions, weight, span or overall design require intermediate structural support. The number and position should be determined by the rooflight system and structural specification, not by a one-size-fits-all approach.
How Large Can a Steel Rooflight Be?
A steel rooflight can be manufactured in many dimensions, but no single maximum size applies to every system. Available dimensions depend on factors such as glass specification, frame design, structural support and configuration, with some steel-framed systems extending to several metres and bespoke systems allowing project-specific dimensions.
Can Steel Rooflights Be Made to Measure?
Yes, steel rooflights can be made to measure to fit unique architectural apertures, non-standard structural openings, and bespoke design specifications. Tailor-made manufacturing ensures a flawless, weather-tight fit for complex home renovations and custom extensions.
Can I Choose Double or Triple Glazing for a Steel Rooflight?
Yes, you can choose between double or triple glazing for a steel rooflight, though your choice depends heavily on aesthetics, profile thickness, and building type. Double glazing is preferred for its balanced weight and slim sightlines, while triple glazing is ideal for maximising thermal insulation and reducing heat loss.
Can a Steel Rooflight Cause Condensation Around the Apex or Glazing Bars?
Yes, a steel rooflight can cause severe condensation around the apex or glazing bars because steel is highly conductive and creates a cold bridge. Utilising thermally broken steel frames and maintaining adequate room ventilation significantly mitigates this moisture buildup.
Can a Steel Rooflight Cause Too Much Solar Heat in Summer?
Yes, a steel rooflight can cause too much solar heat in summer if untreated clear glass allows unchecked infrared radiation into the room below. Specialised solar-control or tinted glazing coatings can reflect excess heat and keep indoor living spaces comfortable.
Can a Steel Rooflight Be Opened for Ventilation?
Yes, a steel rooflight can be opened for ventilation only if it is specifically engineered with manual winding rods or concealed electric actuators. Fixed configurations are permanently sealed and cannot provide active airflow.
Can Blinds Be Fitted to a Steel Rooflight?
Yes, blinds can be fitted to a steel rooflight, though the installation typically requires specialist tensioned systems or integrated honeycomb blinds. These mechanisms ensure the blinds operate smoothly against overhead glass without sagging or disrupting the slim steel framework.
