What Are the Benefits of Installing Double Glazed Rooflight?
Double-glazed rooflights introduce abundant natural daylight into flat-roof extensions, kitchens, and living spaces whilst featuring dual-pane insulating technology that significantly enhances thermal performance. Their overall efficiency depends on factors such as glass specification, framing materials, spacer technology, sealing quality, and professional installation.
8 benefits of installing double-glazed rooflights include:
Reduces Heat Loss Through the Roof Glazing
The dual-pane glass configuration creates an insulated thermal barrier that traps warm air inside your property, drastically cutting down on upward heat dissipation compared to single-glazed alternatives.
Keeps Rooms Warmer and More Comfortable in Winter
By minimising cold downdraughts from overhead glazing, double-glazed rooflights help maintain an even, comfortable room temperature throughout the coldest months of the year.
Helps Reduce Internal Condensation
Advanced thermal spacer bars and dual-pane insulation minimise internal surface temperature drops, effectively lowering the risk of moisture condensation forming on the glass.
Lowers the Amount of Energy Needed for Heating
Improved thermal retention reduces the overall workload on your central heating system, helping you decrease energy consumption and lower your household utility bills.
Reduces More Outside Noise
The acoustic damping properties of two separate glass panes combined with a sealed cavity help muffle external sounds, such as heavy rain, traffic, and wind.
Supports Low-E Glass for Better Heat Retention
Double-glazed units can be enhanced with Low-E (low-emissivity) glass coatings that reflect radiant heat back into the room whilst still allowing maximum daylight to pass through.
Supports Solar-Control Glass to Reduce Summer Overheating
Tinted or specialised solar-control glass options can be integrated into the double-glazed unit to filter out excessive solar heat gain, keeping extensions cool during warm summer months.
Provides a Strong Safety Glazing Configuration
Toughened or laminated glass options can be incorporated into the inner and outer panes, offering high impact resistance and robust safety performance overall.

Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Double Glazed Rooflights?
Double glazed rooflights are specialised architectural overhead glazing units built with two distinct panes of glass separated by a sealed insulating spacer bar. They are professionally installed into flat or low-pitch roofs to flood interior spaces with natural daylight whilst delivering enhanced thermal performance and weather resistance.
What Is Inside the Gap Between Double Glazed Rooflight Panes?
The gap between double-glazed rooflight panes (known as the cavity or Insulated Glass Unit) contains either dehydrated air or an inert gas (such as argon, krypton, or xenon), maintained in a hermetically sealed environment. This specialised gas fill significantly inhibits thermal transfer and improves the overall energy efficiency of the rooflight.
What Does Low-E Glass Do in a Double Glazed Rooflight?
Low-E (low-emissivity) glass reduces radiant heat transfer through the glazing in a double-glazed rooflight. Its thin low-emissivity coating helps retain heat inside the property whilst still allowing natural daylight to pass through the rooflight.
Do Double Glazed Rooflights Help Reduce Condensation?
Yes, double-glazed rooflights can help reduce condensation by keeping the internal glass surface warmer than less insulated glazing under comparable conditions. Condensation can still occur when indoor humidity is high, or ventilation is insufficient, so glazing performance is only one factor in controlling moisture.
Can Double Glazed Rooflights Reduce Outside Noise?
Yes, double-glazed rooflights help reduce outside noise by using two independent glass barriers and an insulating air or gas gap that dampens sound wave transmission. This acoustic insulation creates a noticeably quieter indoor environment by muting external disturbances like traffic and heavy rain.
Should the Inner Pane of a Double Glazed Rooflight Be Laminated?
Yes, the inner pane of a double-glazed rooflight can be laminated where the rooflight design, safety requirements, and glazing specification call for it. Laminated glass contains an interlayer that helps hold broken glass together, reducing the risk of loose fragments falling into the room below.
How Can You Tell if a Double Glazed Rooflight Seal Has Failed?
You can tell if a double-glazed rooflight seal has failed by noticing persistent misting, condensation, or water staining trapped directly between the two glass panes. Once the hermetic seal breaks down, ambient moisture enters the cavity and cannot escape, requiring professional unit replacement.
Why Does a Double Glazed Rooflight Mist Up Between the Panes?
Double-glazed rooflight mist up between the panes because the perimeter hermetic seal has degraded, allowing moisture-laden air to penetrate the insulating cavity. Temperature fluctuations then cause this trapped moisture to condense on the internal glass surfaces, obscuring the view and reducing thermal efficiency.
Is Double or Triple Glazing Better for a Rooflight?
Double glazing is better for a rooflight if the selected system already provides suitable thermal performance whilst meeting the project’s weight, cost, and structural requirements, whereas triple glazing is better if a higher level of insulation is required and the rooflight system can accommodate it. The right option depends on the property, roof structure, glass specification, rooflight size, and required thermal performance.
Are Double Glazed Rooflights Suitable for Kitchens and High-Humidity Rooms?
Yes, double-glazed rooflights are suitable for kitchens and high-humidity rooms because their thermally efficient construction minimises internal surface condensation risks. When paired with an opening mechanism, they also provide effective ventilation to quickly clear out cooking steam and moisture.
Do Double Glazed Rooflights Need Planning Permission?
No, double-glazed rooflights do not need planning permission as long as they comply with standard Permitted Development limits, such as projecting no more than 150 millimetres beyond the existing roof plane. However, properties in conservation areas or listed buildings may require formal local authority consent.
Do Double Glazed Rooflights Need to Meet Building Regulations for Thermal Performance?
Yes, double-glazed rooflights must meet UK Building Regulations for thermal performance, complying with strict maximum U-value standards to ensure energy conservation. Professional installations managed by accredited specialists like Bowalker guarantee full regulatory compliance and proper documentation.
Can a Replacement Double Glazed Rooflight Be FENSA Certified?
Yes, a replacement double-glazed rooflight or roof window can be FENSA certified if it is installed by a registered contractor like Bowalker under our FENSA certification (Reg: 33081). This official status streamlines the compliance process without requiring separate local council building control inspections.
Where Are Double Glazed Rooflights Most Suitable?
Double glazed rooflights are most suitable for flat-roof extensions, modern kitchen diners, loft conversions, and home offices where vertical windows cannot reach. They provide a reliable source of overhead natural illumination across architectural living spaces.
What Should Be Considered Before Installing a Double Glazed Rooflight?
Before installing a double-glazed rooflight, you must consider structural roof weight capacities, directional orientation for solar heat gain, and the pitch requirements for proper drainage. Professional site surveys help determine the ideal size, frame material, and glazing specifications for your specific layout.
How to Maintain a Double Glazed Rooflight?
To maintain a double-glazed rooflight, you should periodically clean the exterior glass surface with non-abrasive solutions and clear away leaves or debris to ensure proper water runoff. Regular inspections of the perimeter seals and flashing will also help preserve weather-tight integrity for years to come.
