Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Barrel Vault Rooflight?
A barrel vault rooflight is an arched, semi-cylindrical glazed structure designed to span large architectural openings and flood interior spaces with continuous natural daylight. It combines curved framing profiles with transparent or translucent glazing panels to deliver a striking visual feature and exceptional structural performance across flat or low-pitch roofs.
How Wide and Long Can a Barrel Vault Rooflight Be?
A barrel vault rooflight can range between 4 feet and 24 feet (1.2 to 7.3 meters) in standard clear span widths. Furthermore, these systems can extend to a virtually unlimited total length by utilising modular sections or continuous structural designs tailored to the building’s footprint.
How Is the Radius of a Barrel Vault Rooflight Determined?
The radius of a barrel vault rooflight is determined by calculating the proportional relationship between the total width of the roof opening and the desired height of the arch (rise). Engineers evaluate structural load requirements, aesthetic preferences, and material flexibility to establish the optimal curvature for each installation.
Are Barrel Vault Rooflights Suitable for Long Corridors and Large Roof Openings?
Yes, barrel vault rooflights are exceptionally suitable for long corridors and large roof openings because their continuous linear design evenly distributes natural daylight across expansive spans. This architectural capability eliminates dark central zones and maximises interior illumination without requiring bulky intermediate support beams.
Can a Barrel Vault Rooflight Be Installed on a Flat or Low-Pitch Roof?
Yes, a barrel vault rooflight can be installed over suitable flat or low-pitch roofs when the supporting structure and upstand are correctly designed. The curved profile helps direct rainwater towards the sides, while the complete installation must provide suitable drainage and weather protection.
Should a Barrel Vault Rooflight Use Glass or Polycarbonate?
A barrel vault rooflight can utilise either option depending on project specifications, though high-grade architectural glass is often preferred for premium residential applications seeking superior optical clarity, scratch resistance, and long-term durability. Alternatively, multi-wall polycarbonate is sometimes selected for lightweight commercial spans requiring high impact resistance and enhanced thermal insulation.
Can Barrel Vault Rooflights Include Opening Sections for Ventilation?
Yes, barrel vault rooflights can include opening sections for ventilation and automated smoke exhaust operations to ensure healthy indoor air quality. These functional vents can be integrated using manual winders or motorised actuators connected to modern climate control systems.
How Does a Barrel Vault Rooflight Drain Rainwater?
A barrel vault rooflight drains rainwater naturally due to its curved, arched geometry, which naturally guides water down the slope of the vault toward the perimeter flashing. From there, water flows smoothly away from the glazing aperture into standard roof drainage gutters and rainwater systems.
Does a Barrel Vault Rooflight Need a Structural Upstand or Supporting Frame?
Yes, a barrel vault rooflight needs a structural upstand (also known as a curb) to elevate the curved glazing above the flat roof surface and provide a solid anchoring base. This upstand ensures proper waterproofing, facilitates correct water drainage, and securely transfers structural loads into the building’s roof deck.
How Do Wind and Snow Loads Affect Barrel Vault Rooflight Design?
Wind and snow loads affect barrel vault rooflight design by creating unique aerodynamic lift and gravitational pressure forces across their curved, arched geometry. Engineers must calculate these external loads carefully to specify the appropriate frame thickness, glazing strength, and anchor fixings required to withstand severe local weather conditions.
Can You Walk on a Barrel Vault Rooflight?
No, you should never walk directly on a barrel vault rooflight as standard curved glazing and frame profiles are not designed to support human body weight. Specialised walk-on rooflight specifications require heavy-duty structural glass and reinforced framing, which must be explicitly requested and engineered for specific access requirements.
Do I Need Planning Permission for a Barrel Vault Rooflight?
Yes, planning permission may be required for a barrel vault rooflight depending on its projection height, the architectural style of the property, and local council guidelines. Homeowners should always consult their local planning authority before starting work, particularly if the roof modification alters the primary roofline significantly.
Do Building Regulations Apply to Barrel Vault Rooflights?
Yes, Building Regulations absolutely apply to barrel vault rooflights because installations must comply with strict legal standards regarding thermal performance (U-values), structural stability, and fire safety. Working with a FENSA-registered professional like Bowalker ensures that all qualifying replacement work meets these mandatory regulatory requirements.
Can a Barrel Vault Rooflight Be Installed on a Listed Building or in a Conservation Area?
Yes, a barrel vault rooflight can sometimes be installed on a listed building or within a conservation area, provided you secure explicit prior consent from local heritage officers. These installations typically require sensitive framing choices, such as traditional steel profiles, to match the historic character of the surrounding architecture.
How Do Span, Radius and Rise Affect a Barrel Vault Rooflight?
The span, radius, and rise affect a barrel vault rooflight by directly defining its structural proportions, height profile, and overall aesthetic impact on the building. Getting these engineering metrics right ensures optimal load distribution, rainwater runoff efficiency, and maximum visual elegance.
Where Are Barrel Vault Rooflights Most Suitable?
Barrel vault rooflights are most suitable for modern home extensions, large open-plan living areas, expansive hallways, and commercial corridors requiring dramatic architectural daylighting. Their elongated profile makes them ideal for spaces where traditional flat rooflights fail to provide sufficient light coverage.
What Should Be Considered Before Installing a Barrel Vault Rooflight?
Before installing a barrel vault rooflight, consider factors such as the structural load-bearing capacity of your roof deck, thermal insulation goals, and internal clearance heights. Additionally, evaluating orientation for solar gain and deciding between fixed or opening ventilation configurations will ensure the final installation meets your lifestyle needs.
