What Are the Benefits of Installing Laminated Glass Rooflight?
Laminated glass rooflights combine multiple glass layers with a bonded safety interlayer that helps retain fragments if the glazing breaks. Their safety, security, acoustic, UV, and structural performance depends on the glass build-up, interlayer type, pane thickness, supporting frame, and complete rooflight specification.
8 key benefits of installing laminated glass rooflights include:
Holds Broken Glass Together After Impact
Special polymer interlayers bond firmly to the glass panes, ensuring that any shattered fragments adhere securely to the membrane rather than scattering.
Reduces the Risk of Glass Falling Into the Room Below
The resilient interlayer acts as an effective retention barrier, completely eliminating the danger of sharp shards dropping into living spaces underneath.
Provides Better Protection Against Fall-Through When Properly Specified
Engineered robustly to withstand high downward pressure, correctly specified laminated overhead glazing safeguards against accidental falls from above.
Improves Resistance to Forced Entry
The tough, multi-layered core significantly deters physical attacks and break-in attempts, offering enhanced home security from roof-level access points.
Reduces External Noise Entering the Home
The acoustic dampening properties of the central interlayer absorb sound waves, noticeably muffling traffic, aircraft, and heavy weather noise.
Helps Protect Furniture and Interiors From UV Fading
Built-in UV filtering layers block a vast majority of harmful ultraviolet rays, preventing interior carpets, fabrics, and furnishings from fading.
Maintains a Protective Barrier After the Glass Cracks
Even if the exterior pane sustains heavy damage or cracking, the intact inner layer preserves weatherproof integrity until a replacement is fitted.
Supports Higher-Safety Rooflight and Walk-On Specifications
The inherent strength and compliance of laminated construction make it the premier choice for high-specification architectural designs, overhead walkways, and roof terraces.

Read moreBowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend
Read moreWe had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Laminated Glass Rooflight?
A laminated glass rooflight is an overhead architectural glazing system featuring two or more glass panes permanently bonded together with a resilient polymer interlayer (such as PVB or ionomer). This construction provides superior safety by holding fragments in place if damaged, alongside excellent acoustic dampening and UV protection.
What Happens When Laminated Glass in a Rooflight Breaks?
When laminated glass in a rooflight breaks, it cracks in a spiderweb pattern instead of shattering into loose pieces. The fragments remain securely adhered to the flexible inner membrane, which prevents dangerous shards from falling into the living space below and preserves the weather barrier until a replacement can be fitted.
What Is the Difference Between Laminated and Toughened Glass in a Rooflight?
Laminated glass in a rooflight uses an interlayer to retain broken fragments, whereas toughened glass receives heat treatment to increase its resistance to impact and thermal stress. When toughened glass breaks, it is designed to fragment into relatively small pieces, whilst laminated glass is designed to keep fractured pieces attached to the interlayer.
What Is the Difference Between PVB and Ionomer Laminated Glass?
PVB laminated glass uses a polyvinyl butyral interlayer that provides fragment retention and can support acoustic, security, and UV-control requirements, whilst ionomer laminated glass uses a stiffer interlayer suited to certain structural glazing applications. The appropriate material depends on the rooflight design, glass dimensions, loads, support conditions, and required post-breakage performance.
Does Laminated Glass Make a Rooflight Non-Fragile?
No, laminated glass does not automatically make a rooflight non-fragile because lamination describes the glass construction rather than the tested performance of the complete rooflight assembly. Non-fragility depends on factors such as the glass build-up, frame, supports, fixings, dimensions, loads, and applicable testing or classification.
Can You Walk on a Laminated Glass Rooflight?
You can only walk on a laminated glass rooflight if the complete system is specifically designed and tested for walk-on use and the installation meets its stated load requirements. Laminated glass alone does not make a rooflight walkable, so the glass build-up, interlayer, frame, supports, dimensions, and design loads must all be suitable.
Does Laminated Glass Improve Rooflight Security?
Yes, laminated glass can improve rooflight security because its bonded interlayer helps keep fractured glass together and can make the glazing more difficult to penetrate after impact. Overall security also depends on the laminate specification, frame strength, glazing retention, locks, fixings, and accessibility of the rooflight.
Does Laminated Glass Reduce Noise Through a Rooflight?
Yes, laminated glass can reduce noise transmission through a rooflight because the glass and suitable interlayer can help dampen sound passing through the glazing. Actual acoustic performance depends on the laminate type, pane thicknesses, insulating cavities, frame seals, installation, and surrounding roof construction.
Does Laminated Glass Help Protect Furniture From UV Fading?
Yes, laminated glass helps protect furniture from UV fading by blocking up to 99% of harmful ultraviolet rays. This protective quality safeguards interior carpets, fabrics, and timber flooring from long-term sun damage.
When Is Laminated Glass Required for Overhead Glazing?
Laminated glass is required for overhead glazing when rooflights or skylights are situated more than 5 metres above floor level. It is also mandated when units are located directly over critical hazard zones such as swimming pools, walkways, and seating areas where falling glass would pose severe risks.
Do Building Regulations Apply to Laminated Glass Rooflights?
Yes, UK Building Regulations apply to laminated glass rooflights because all installations must meet strict safety, thermal efficiency U-values, weatherproofing, and structural integrity standards. Compliance ensures the rooflight performs reliably over its lifetime.
Do I Need Planning Permission for a Laminated Glass Rooflight?
You usually do not need planning permission to install a laminated glass rooflight if it meets standard Permitted Development limits, such as not projecting more than 150 millimetres beyond the roof slope plane. However, properties located within conservation areas or listed buildings require explicit local authority approval.
Can a Replacement Laminated Glass Rooflight Be FENSA Certified?
A replacement in-plane pitched roof window or roof light can be FENSA certified if it is a full replacement within the original footprint by a FENSA Approved Installer. However, flat roof rooflights or glass-only replacements are excluded from this certification scheme.
How Does Laminated Glass Improve Rooflight Safety?
Laminated glass improves rooflight safety by preventing catastrophic shattering and retaining broken pieces firmly on its adhesive interlayer. Furthermore, it protects against accidental fall-throughs and offers high resistance to heavy overhead impacts.
What Laminated Glass Specification Should a Rooflight Use?
A rooflight should ideally use an 8.8mm laminated inner pane, comprising two 4mm glass sheets bonded with a PVB interlayer, paired with a 6mm or 8mm toughened outer pane for standard overhead double glazing. This combination strikes the optimal balance between thermal performance and structural security.
Where Are Laminated Glass Rooflights Most Suitable?
Laminated glass rooflights are most suitable for domestic single-storey extensions, urban homes prone to security concerns, multi-story open spaces requiring overhead safety, and rooms exposed to high street noise or intense sunlight. They provide a versatile solution for modern architectural demands.
What Should Be Considered Before Installing a Laminated Glass Rooflight?
Before installing a laminated glass rooflight, you should consider roof pitch requirements, structural load-bearing capacity, aperture dimensions, and thermal performance targets. Additionally, evaluating your acoustic needs and deciding between fixed, opening, or manual versus electric operation ensures the final system matches your lifestyle.
