Large glazed areas with minimal visible framing create wide openings in astragal bar cornerless doors, whilst applied bar layouts introduce structured geometric detailing across the glass. Coordinating the bar pattern across adjoining panels is particularly important where the doors form one continuous visual elevation. Diamond, square grid and bespoke patterns can be configured to suit the opening and door design. Large glazed sliding panels combined with applied astragal bars create wide openings whilst introducing structured divided-light detailing across the closed doors. Bar patterns need to be carefully coordinated between adjoining sliding panels so the grid remains visually consistent when the doors are closed. Depending on the selected system, sliding doors can use top-hung or floor-supported track arrangements. We install and replace sliding doors with astragal bars using compatible track systems, secure locking and accurately aligned decorative glazing.

Astragal Bar French Doors

Astragal Bar French Doors

Two hinged glazed panels with applied astragal bars combine the classic double-door arrangement with raised divided-light detailing suited to cottages, period properties and traditional-style homes. Diamond, square grid and bespoke patterns can be coordinated across both leaves to create a continuous appearance when the doors are closed. By carefully aligning the decorative bar layout across both leaves, we install and replace French doors with astragal bars using suitable glazing, secure heavy-duty hinges, multipoint locking and bar configurations selected around the door proportions.

Bowalker replaced all of our windows and patio doors in November. They are very efficient and got the job done in the pouring rain but did it quick and professionally. We had a couple of teething issues with the doors after completion and they did not hesitate to come out and rectify the issue. Excellent customer service and a friendly team. Would highly recommend

We had a total of 6 windows fitted at end of June 2025 (2 bathroom(frosted), 1 hallway,1 dining room and two big bay windows complete with 2 window boards). Took 5 days in total as bay windows were load bearing ,the window boards were not in warehouse so took extra time to arrive and fit , the silicone/mastic finish wasn’t great and they cut one end of a window board wrong , but after a telephone call a new team of fitters came out and rectified the mistakes of original fitters that we had noticed , a window pane had got scratched in delivery so they replaced that as well. This was a big job that entailed some mistakes but over time was rectified by bowalker windows by sending out another team of fitters to fix some minor mistakes of original fitters . We went on a recommendation from a work colleague who had used Bowalker windows in the past as were very good. Maybe just improve your fitters mastic silicone skills a bit more but is is an old house of 110 years and nothing is level in this house

Frequently Asked Questions

Astragal bars for doors are decorative glazing bars fitted to glazed door panels to recreate the appearance of traditional divided-light glazing. They can create Georgian, diamond, square or bespoke patterns across a modern sealed glass unit without requiring each section to use a separate pane of glass. Astragal bars can be used with uPVC, aluminium, timber, steel and composite doors.

Astragal bar door installation takes around 1 to 2 days for a standard residential replacement, depending on the door configuration, opening dimensions, frame condition and installation requirements. A straightforward French-door replacement may take around one day, whilst larger bifold, sliding or bespoke systems can require additional time for positioning, alignment and adjustment. Our in-house installers check the astragal bar layout, glazing, hardware and final door operation before completing the installation.

Clean astragal bars and glazed doors with warm water, mild detergent and a soft microfibre cloth, wiping gently around the bar edges and joints where dust and condensation residue can collect. Use a soft-bristled brush for corners and junctions between the bar and glazing surface, and avoid abrasive pads, solvent-based cleaners or harsh chemicals that could damage the bar finish, frame or sealed glazing unit. Clean sliding and bifold door tracks separately using a dry brush and damp cloth to remove debris and maintain smooth panel operation.

Choose the right astragal bars by considering the door style, glazing dimensions, property’s architectural period, preferred pattern, bar width and frame material. Georgian grids with evenly spaced horizontal and vertical bars suit period and traditional properties, diamond patterns complement cottages and rural homes, and bespoke geometric layouts can be configured to match existing decorative glazing or windows elsewhere on the elevation. During your consultation, we assess the door proportions and recommend a bar width, profile and configuration that complements the surrounding architecture.

Consider astragal bar door design ideas such as Georgian grids for period properties, diamond patterns for cottages, square layouts for traditional homes and bespoke geometric designs for contemporary interiors or Crittall-inspired schemes. Astragal bars can be incorporated into entrance, French, bifold and sliding doors across uPVC, aluminium, timber and steel frames to create consistent decorative detailing throughout the property. Coordinating the bar layout and profile width with existing window astragal bars or leaded glazing can also create a unified decorative scheme across the full elevation.

Bowalker provides a 10-year, insurance-backed guarantee on qualifying astragal bar installation and replacement work, giving you confidence in our workmanship. Our in-house installers manage each project from measurement through to final installation and inspection, ensuring accurate alignment and secure installation. Where applicable, qualifying replacement external door work can be registered under FENSA.
